Circuito San Juan Villicum to host WorldSBK until 2023, 2021 round confirmed Tuesday, 14 September 2021 The Argentinean Round will be back on the calendar for two more seasons with a renewal seeing San Juan host WorldSBK until 2023 Dorna WSBK Organization (DWO), Grupo OSD and the San Juan government are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached to ensure that the Circuito San Juan Villicum in Argentina will be featured on the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship calendar for the next two years. The new agreement not only means the WorldSBK and WorldSSP classes will return to San Juan in 2022 and 2023, but also confirms the Argentinean Round will go ahead for the current 2021 season too. The 2021 event is scheduled to take place on October 15, 16 and 17, with updates on ticket sales and event schedule to be released in the coming days. The event will be held under specific protocols to be announced shortly, but will mark a return for WorldSBK in Argentina and South America for the first time since 2019. Jorge Chica, San Juan Government - Sports Secretary “Ensuring the presence of WorldSBK in our province allows us to push forward the sporting project of the government, but also to generate an economic impact and employment opportunities for the people of San Juan. Having an international event again takes a joint effort and we'll keep working to improve the services, facilities and values of our province." Orlando Terranova, Grupo OSD - CEO "The extension of the WorldSBK agreement in San Juan reflects the hard work which we carried out in challenging circumstances. This way, we ensure WorldSBK's foothold in the region and retain a great sporting show on the biggest stage in South America.” Gregorio Lavilla, WorldSBK Executive Director "We're pleased to be able to return and race in the San Juan province. There's a great passion for racing and motorcycling in the area and after postponing last year's event, we wanted to secure WorldSBK presence in the region for years to come. For the Championship, our teams, our riders and also for our partners, the Argentinean round is a unique opportunity we want to consolidate, as having a round in South America is key for WorldSBK's growth.”

Is Iker Lecuona’s switch to WorldSBK and Team HRC a done deal? Sunday, 12 September 2021 With an announcement due soon about his future, Iker Lecuona may well be on his way to World Superbike… With all the drama on-track of the 2021 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship comes a whole load of speculation about the 2022 rider line-up, and there’s been plenty of hype about one team in particular. Team HRC will not retain the services of veteran Spaniard Alvaro Bautista for 2021, as he heads back to the factory Ducati team, although a young Spanish rookie could be his replacement. Iker Lecuona has already stated that he ‘knows where he’ll be riding’ in 2022, and it’s sounding increasingly likely to be WorldSBK, as reported by motorsport.com on Fridayand as Lecuona himself all but confirmed during an interview at the Aragon Grand Prix on Sunday morning. The 21-year-old finished 11th in the race on Sunday, having been in the battle for sixth at one point. Speaking in an interview on the MotoGP™ World Feed broadcast at MotorLand Aragon during Sunday morning’s Warm-Up sessions, Lecuona shed light on his future and his 2022 plans will be announced, saying: “I think next week, I expect it. You know, when you sign a contract, it’s not easy; you don’t speak and sign directly at the first meeting. You need to think a lot, to speak a lot, and to prepare all the small points. I know my future, I know where I will be next year, but for now it’s not signed. We still finalizing every point in the contract. I expect to say something at Misano if everything is fine.” Thanking KTM for all the work they’ve done with him, Lecuona showed his gratitude: “I need to say thanks to Herve Poncharal, to Pit Beirer, to Mike Leitner and to all KTM guys, because they gave me the opportunity to be here in MotoGP™, to fight with Valentino, to do very good races. I enjoyed a lot; I learnt a lot also because to ride with these best riders of this world is very nice. You learn race by race. I learnt; I have improved my performance. I have improved, not only as a rider.” Reiterating about his future, Lecuona all but confirmed his departure from the paddock, unsure whether he’ll return to MotoGP™ in the future or not: “I think I’ve learnt a lot of things for my life too. I’m very happy to have stayed here for two years. I don’t know if, in the future, I will come back or if I will stay in another Championship. I don’t know; I just know I want to continue these performances, to continue to enjoy, to fight with my idols, and then we will see what happen.” Concluding Sunday with a mention to his future, Lecuona continued to remain coy on giving confirmation to where he will be but did confirm that it is more than one year: “For now I can’t say where I go; I can say that I know my future and that it is not only one year, so I am more relaxed. I’m happy with the opportunity and very happy with the new objective. For now, I can’t say anything!” Also linked with the Team HRC seat is Tom Sykes, with the 2013 WorldSBK Championship stating that the project is of “big interest” to him, whilst Chaz Davies wasn’t sure he’d be the right profile for the ride but did say “never say never” when asked.

Moto2 rider Xaxi Vierge is set to partner Iker Lecuona at Honda's WorldSBK team next year, leaving Leon Haslam without a seat.
My friend, Adrian: HRC went for ‘necessary faster’ but it’s so powerful it’s damn near unrideable until the electronics have to intervene so much it becomes slow and unrideable.

Davies out for remainder of Barcelona weekend following Superpole Race crash Sunday, 19 September 2021 The Welshman has been declared unfit following a heavy fall during Sunday’s first race of the day The opening race on Sunday for the 2021 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s Hyundai N Catalunya Round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was action-packed from the start. However, Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven) will take no further part in the race weekend following a crash for the Ducati rider with Lucas Mahias on Lap 3 of the Tissot Superpole Race. The crash, which started at Turn 11 but then finished in Turn 12 left Davies on the ground, conscious but in discomfort. He was stretchered away and taken to the medical centre, where he was diagnosed with a lumbar contusion, whilst remaining stable and conscious. The 32-time World Superbike race winner has been transported to Catalunya Hospital for further assessments. Everyone at WorldSBK wishes Chaz Davies a speedy recovery.

Rea holds off Razgatlioglu challenge in Red Flagged Superpole Race The six-time Champion battled hard for victory ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu, while Alvaro Bautista was back on the podium The Tissot Superpole Race at the Hyundai N Catalunya Round provided plenty of drama and action in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship as Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) claimed a hard-fought victory over Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) to win by two tenths, while the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya made history as it became the 325th race three different manufacturers have stood on the same podium in WorldSBK history with Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) claiming third place. RED FLAG DISRUPTS RUNNING Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) got the lead of the race into Turn 1 but soon found himself having to fend off the challenge from Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the head of the field, with Rea on Pirelli’s SC1 tyre while his rivals were on the SCX. The battle continued through the first three laps before a Red Flag was shown on Lap 4 following an incident at Turn 11 involving Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven), with Davies taken to the medical centre-up for a check-up following the incident. Davies was stable and conscious following the incident but was declared unfit, before he was transferred to Catalunya Hospital for further assessment. Mahias took to the grid for the restarted race but brought his bike back to the pits three laps in. RESTARTED RACE: FIVE-LAP SUPERPOLE RACE The grid for the restarted race was based on the last completed timing point for each rider, with Razgatlioglu, Rea and Redding starting the five-lap race from the front row, with Rea starting the restarted race on the SCX tyre. The first lap of the five laps involved incredible battling between the lead group, but it was Rea who came out on top ahead of Razgatlioglu. Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) was in third place after starting the restarted race from sixth place, fighting his way up to claim his first podium since Aragon 2020, a wait of 37 races, and to claim a front row start for this afternoon’s Race 2. Bautista had been running second ahead of Razgatlioglu but was overtaken by the Turkish star, before battling Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) for the podium.
STARTING RACE 2 FROM ROW TWO Lowes claimed fourth place in the Superpole Race to secure a second row start and he will be joined by Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing); Bassani starting Race 2 from sixth place after the highs of his Race 1 podium and a big crash in Sunday’s Warm-Up session. FROM THE THIRD ROW… Two Hondas will start from inside the top seven with Leon Haslam (Team HRC) claiming seventh place with American Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) recovering from a crash yesterday to take eighth place in the Superpole Race. Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) took his best ever WorldSBK result with ninth after a battle with Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Samuele Cavalieri (Barni Racing Team); the Italian also claiming his best WorldSBK result. TO NOTE The Tissot Superpole Race proved to be one to forget for the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team with both riders retiring from the race after an incident between the two at Turn 6 on the opening lap of the race, with Michael van der Mark coming off his bike in the gravel while Sykes was able to bring his bike back to the pits. Van der Mark lost the front of his BMW M 1000 RR going through Turn 6 and made contact with Sykes. Neither rider was able to take to the grid for the restarted race. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and Kohta Nozane (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) retired from the restarted race on the opening lap after an incident at Turn 11, with Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) also involved; the incident placed under investigation by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards with no further action required. Redding had to take to the gravel with that incident and lost lots of time, finishing the race in 15th place.

Rapid Rinaldi takes stunning Catalunya Race 2 win, Razgatlioglu reclaims Championship lead Michael Ruben Rinaldi returned to the top step of the rostrum with victory after a tyre gamble in Race 2 Race 2 for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was a dramatic encounter with Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claiming victory after a long battle with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) reclaimed the Championship lead by a single point with second place. EARLY RED FLAG The Red Flags were thrown on Lap 2 of the 20-lap race following an incident involving Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK) at Turn 1. Sykes was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash but was conscious. He was diagnosed with a head injury and concussion and transferred to Catalunya Hospital for further assessments. EARLY BATTLING IN THE 19-LAP RESTART The new race distance of 19 laps got underway with Rinaldi a fast starter as he moved into the lead of the race ahead of Razgatlioglu (and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). Razgatlioglu was able to go with Rinaldi throughout the 19-lap encounter but Rea started to drop back. Razgatlioglu and Rinaldi pulled away from Rea with Rinaldi. The Turkish star was able to pass Rinaldi to take the lead of the race, but this lasted for just a handful of laps as Rinaldi responded into Turn 1 with a handful of laps remaining, before extending his lead. With Rea battling to stay on the podium, he had to fight to keep Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) behind him but his attempts proved to be in vain with the Italian rookie getting past on lap 10 before Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) followed him through. At the start of Lap 18, Redding made a move on Locatelli into Turn 1 for third place with Redding using the SC0 tyre, along with Rinaldi, while his rivals were on the SCX tyre. Bautista followed Redding through a lap later at the same corner. It meant Rinaldi claimed his first win since the Tissot Superpole Race at Misano, and the first time Rinaldi, Razgatlioglu and Redding shared the podium. Bautista just missed out on a podium place with fourth place, with Locatelli in fifth COMPLETING THE TOP TEN Rea finished the race in sixth place, more than three seconds down on the battle for the podium, but he finished three seconds clear of American star Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) in seventh, his best result since the Superpole Race at the Autodrom Most. Rea’s sixth place means Razgatlioglu claims the Championship lead by a single point ahead of Rea. Gerloff was the top Independent rider and finishing ahead of Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) in eighth. Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed ninth place with Japanese rookie Kohta Nozane (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) taking his first top-ten finish in a full-length race with tenth. Nozane continued his run of lightning starts in Race 2 to set himself up nicely for the 19-lap encounter. TAKING HOME POINTS Honda secured a points finish with both riders as Leon Haslam (Team HRC) finished in 11th place, five seconds clear of Samuele Cavalieri (Barni Racing Team) in 12th, just falling short of his career-best 11th he set in the Tissot Superpole Race. Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) was 13th in Race 2 after a strong weekend for the French rider. Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Isaac Viñales (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) had an incredible battle for 14th place with Argentinean rider finishing just 0.081s clear of rookie Viñales. Jonas Folger (Bonovo MGM Action) was the last classified rider in 16th place. TO NOTE Alex Lowes’ (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) came to an end at Turn 2 on Lap 1 after he came off his Kawasaki ZX-10RR, forcing the British rider to retire from the race. Jonas Folger (Bonovo MGM Action) and Lachlan Epis (OUTDO TPR Team Pedercini Racing) had to attempt avoiding action at the back of the grid, with Epis retiring from the race. Lowes was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the incident and diagnosed with a left wrist contusion. Mahias joined the restarted race but brought his bike back to the pits and retired from the race, while Loris Cresson (OUTDO TPR Team Pedercini Racing) also did not finish the race.

Sykes conscious after race two collision BMW Motorrad’s Tom Sykes was involved in a heavy crash during Sunday afternoon’s WorldSBK race at Barcelona with the British rider transferred to hospital. Having fallen during the opening lap of Sunday’s feature race, Sykes was hit by oncoming rider, Lucas Mahias, with the red flag being brought out as medical attention was delivered. Sykes was taken to the circuit’s medical centre where initial examinations revealed a concussion and he was therefore transferred to Barcelona hospital for further precautionary investigations. “First of all, our thoughts are with Tom today,” BMW Team boss Shaun Muir said. “He has gone for further checks at Barcelona Hospital. “He has been talking and is conscious which is a good sign so we will wait for further information, however this really casts a shadow over the whole day. We wish Tom a speedy recovery.”
