McLaren find loophole in aero rulesMcLaren will be extremely happy with their first full day and a half of testing, with Lando Norris finishing the day with the second quickest time and his team mate Daniel Ricciardo in seventh, despite posting the fastest time in the morning session. They have found a way to extend the floor transition rearward to create two strakes below the theoretical cut line. These taller inboard strakes then gradually extrude upwards and outwards as the diffuser’s ceiling expands outwards. This “trick” will no doubt be evaluated by other teams, but it is unlikely that they would be able to copy the concept just yet. With a one day left of testing, and two weeks until the first race, it may be a while before we see any other team sporting the change. formulanerds.com/articles/mclaren-find-loophole-in-aero-rules/?fbclid=IwAR0zNp1BT544fEvk0ydklaLUUS-RJaqVfkct8_uWcRlE1S-O-UKUoaT0Ti8

I'm thinking this is a track that suits the Red Bulls. Beyond that I'm not thinking.

From the quotes everyone thinks someone else will be faster than them but they all think they are fast. But it seems like Max definitively won the pre-season trophy! Two weeks, baby!

So the # 2 @ Red Bull is 1.2 seconds off the pace and the #2 @ Merc is .2 off the pace. Same-o, same-o.

So Merc has a few problems on their hands, First, it looks like the non rake cars (Merc & Forced Nepotism) were hurt more by the floor cut than the teams that usually ran high angles. Second, their gearbox problems didn't give Bottas enough laps for them to make adjustments before lulu got in the car. Third, Hamilton started his session with his usually warm up laps followed by a fast one which left time to register the change in the car's balance leading to some ragged trips off road. Instead of switching to a long run, build the speed up slowly strategy (like he ran on the 3rd day) he persisted with what he was familiar with wasting valuable time.
I don't doubt Merc will be fast this year at some point but the floor cut, not having DAS and the lack of mileage hasn't given the team or drivers time to come to grips with a setup possibility most of the other teams now take for granted.

If I was Merc, I wouldn't even bother showing up to the races after that testing

With their chassis dyno running 24/7 I bet most of the issues will be gone by next Friday...
