What is such a big deal about softer tire compounds? Everyone is in the same boat and will have to stop twice. It is not a safety issue, it is simply a tire management issue. I presume they have a sufficient number of tires to stop twice?

Here is an idea:
Put a small explosive in randomly selected tires. During the race set off the explosive. You don't know who or when. It will spice up the races.
/sarcasm off.
So softer tires won't last as long and 2 stops is slower than 1 stop.
Yet, and since it's going to be hotter next week, why wouldn't you do 2 stops ?

I presume they have a sufficient number of tires to stop twice? True but how will it effect practice and qualifying if everyone goes into tire saving mode early? Next weekend will probably be heavily weighted towards the C4 "hard" compound so it's a good thing they didn't get a lot of use today. |

^I'm thinking gearbox. First clunk was right after an upshift and second clunk was as he downshifted while slowing. No smoke....no fire.
