1963 Rookie of the year trophy presentation? Or, "Sorry we didn't black flag the 98 car for oiling the track right in front of you" consolation prize?

Ok; someone tell me what the hell is going on here. The car and driver is the Santa Ana Eagle driven by Dan Gurney. Look at the left side numbering layout. One has the number running down the side sponson while the other shows a number on just the upper portion of the monocoque. The year is 1969. The lower picture shows Bobby Unser in the #1 Bardahl in the background (only in 1969) but I don't know if this image is from practice or race. In Gurney's qualifying pic, he's got the whole sided numbering too. It's confusing... Ontario didn't open until late summer of 1970 and by then Gurney was in a 1970 Eagle so it can't be an image from there/then. Also, there are many pictures of this Eagle from 1969 lacking the sponsons.

^ Not sure but for the 500 in 1969 Gurney drove the #48 Olsonite Eagle/ Westlake Ford. Bobby drove the #1 Bardahl Lola/ Offy.

But, you've just clued me into something... the #48 with the high number had Osonite on it where the 48 with the low number does not so the high number pic is NOT Gurney at Indianapolis.

And I have no clue what this "thing" is. It lacks the sponsons. Has an engine cover. Has the nose the turbocharged Eagles used in 1969.

I show
'68 Both Gurney and Hulme drove Olsonite Eagles. Same for '69.
'70 Just Gurney in the Olsonite Eagle
'71 Jim Malloy in the Olsonite Eage
'73 Both Bobby and Jerry Grant in Olsonite Eagles

The '69 Gurney pics... does it say Olsonite across the top of the main tub? I can't read it

I'll have to look tomorrow at work... I'd love to know because looking at '69 Eagles throughout the whole year... dang; they went thru so many configurations, drivers... Swede Savage actually drove Gurney's 48 for bit as did Ongais. And for what it's worth, Ray Evernham now owns the car that is supposedly the Gurney, 48 IMS car. What configuration it's in today... I dunno

Here's a sticky wicket. Everyone probably will instantly think this is the car Graham Hill drove with a turbine in it the previous year but supposedly that car was only raced once at Indianapolis, crashed out, got repaired and became property of Richard Petty soon afterward. This actually one of the '69 Lotus cars that were withdrawn due to faulty heat treating on the rear hub carriers. Oh, here they are now

You mean like this? Tony Southgate designed the chassis without a a care in the world for air slipping between the wheels and the tub (external springs, shocks, roll bars). All 3 cars struggled for straight line speed in practice so it's no surprise that the airbox had to be eliminated.

whoa... who is this guy? He started 33rd, and finished 5th as a pure rookie.
And then there's this picture from Carb Day. Cruel irony!
