MV Agusta unveil resplendent 2020 colours to mark 75th anniversary Wednesday, 12 February 2020 ![](https://photos.worldsbk.com/2020/02/12/mvagusta_full.jpg) It is a huge season for the Italian manufacturer, as they aim to celebrate 75 years in the motorcycle business by recapturing World Champion status in 2020 The MV Agusta Reparto Corse team has unveiled its 2020 FIM Supersport World Championship livery in Italy, at the company’s historic headquarters in Schiranna, Varese, Italy. The Italian squad fields a three-bike line-up ahead of the 2020 season, with 2019 WorldSSP Champion Randy Krummenacher leading Raffaele De Rosa and Federico Fuligni into battle for the season ahead. The new colour scheme reveals a slightly lighter and brighter grey, combined with a more striking red, whilst keeping with the two colours that have symbolised the iconic Italian manufacturer. The launch date coincides with the manufacturer’s 75th anniversary as motorcycle constructor, started back on the 12th February, 1945, towards the end of the WW2 in order to retain jobs from the Agusta aviation company and to provide cheap and effective transportation. 75 years on and the manufacturer is still going strong, with Randy Krummenacher eager to return the legendary Italian brand to the top and to celebrate the company’s 75th birthday in style. MV Agusta achieved their first win in WorldSSP thanks to Jules Cluzel back in 2014, whilst their most recent came with Roberto Rolfo in 2017; both coming at Phillip Island. Speaking ahead of the new season, team manager Andrea Quadranti stated his excitement: “The long preparation to the Championship is now behind us, and we are ready to face the first round of the WorldSSP Championship, held at the end of the month in Phillip Island. In the two days tests at the beginning of the week, we will be able to refine the set-up work that we did in the Jerez tests and our riders will take care of the rest. “Randy Krummenacher wants to reconfirm himself as Champion, Raffaele De Rosa does not want to miss the opportunity to fight for the title, whilst Federico Fuligni is expected to make a qualitative leap that will allow him to stay permanently in the leading positions. We are all eager to confront our opponents and determined to play a leading role." MV Agusta have started in 83 WorldSSP races, making their debut back in 2013; of the current WorldSSP manufacturers, they are by far the manufacturer with the least starts. They’ve achieved 16 pole positions, with the last coming at Imola in 2017 whilst a podium in 2020 will be their 40th in the class. Chasing an elusive first WorldSSP title, Randy Krummenacher is aiming to become the first World Supersport rider in history to achieve back-to-back titles with different manufacturers.

Davies: "Ducati perfect for Bautista? At Laguna Seca 2019 it didn't seem": "I know I can be fast and this year I will try to fight for the podium in all the circuits, but I have to constantly work to find the right set-up"
Haslam: "Bautista is a MotoGP rider, it’s not easy to adapt to an inline four": "He prefers to be smooth, which is why he won a lot with Ducati's V4 last year, but he will arrive"
Bautista: "This Honda seems like a 2-stroke, I have to get used to riding it": "The engine has this characteristic, so you have to be very careful with the gas. But we are improving".
Haslam: "The goal for the race? A rider always wants to win"
Redding: "I agree with Ezpeleta. The MotoGP is the top.": “The SBK is the next best after. I'd like to try it with carbon brakes. A podium would be a success for this first weekend."
Davies: "This year we'll all be close."
Razgatlıoglu: "Ducati a missile on the straight? Not a problem": "Just look at how Rea and Bautista went in 2019, you can win with other things".
Van Der Mark: "I'm getting bored, I'm ready and I want to race! Can it be a good year? It must be"

Redding tops frantic WorldSBK FP2 session as 2020 kicks off Friday, 28 February 2020 ![](https://photos.worldsbk.com/2020/02/28/51249_jdr_r1_action_full.jpg) The British rookie led the way as 12 riders were covered by a second after Day 1 in Australia After the first Free Practice session, topped by Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati), ran in mixed conditions, the second session was completely dry. It was a disrupted session following a Red Flag ten minutes into the session for debris on the track, but Redding was able to top the session as the 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship is well and truly underway in frenetic fashion. Redding was one of several riders who set a flurry of fast laps at the end of the 50-minute session as he finished first by almost half-a-second from Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team). Turkish rider Razgatlioglu held off teammate Michael van der Mark who finished third in the session. Razgatlioglu and van der Mark were leading the onslaught to British rider but he was able to resist, slamming in a strong lap time to put a healthy margin between his rivals. Leon Haslam (Team HRC) had been top of the session until the final flurry of laps but finished fourth on his Honda. While Haslam was top of the order, he faced competition from Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha). Baz was consistently setting fast laps and lapped within 0.037s of Haslam but was unable to usurp the British rider. Baz finished the session in fifth place ahead of five-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) in sixth place and Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in seventh. Rea’s Kawasaki teammate, Alex Lowes, finished just outside the top ten in 11th place Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) started off the session in the lower half of the field but improved his pace throughout the session and finished in eighth place. Bautista’s run throughout the session included a slide through Stoner Corner, the third corner on the circuit. The 35-year-old Spaniard seems to have found a breakthrough following the Official Test and will be one to watch throughout the rest of the weekend. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GOELEVEN) finished in ninth despite a mechanical issue at the start of the session which meant he returned to the pits minutes after joining the track. He was able to re-join the action around halfway through the session and kept improving his lap time to eventually finish in ninth place ahead of Xavi Fores (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), who rounded out the top ten in the second practice session on his return to the Championship. German rider Sandro Cortese (OUTDO Kawasaki TPR) finished the session in 12th place, the last rider to finish within one second of pace setting Redding. Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) finished the session in 13th place ahead of Eugene Laverty (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and American rider Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team); Gerloff particularly impressing on his first time at the track in a race weekend. Gerloff’s teammate Federico Caricasulo finished the session in 16th place, a tenth of a second behind his teammate, and 0.024s ahead of Chilean rider Maximilian Scheib (ORELAC Racing VerdNatura). Leon Camier (Barni Racing Team) and Takumi Takahashi (MIE Racing Althea Honda Team) rounded out the field in 18th and 19th respectively. Thoughts from pitlane… WorldSBK opens with a bang in 2020 Friday, 28 February 2020 ![](https://photos.worldsbk.com/2020/02/28/51060_jdr_r1_action_full.jpg) The top five all share their thoughts after the first day of action, with detailed analysis and vows to be in contention consuming Phillip Island… The opening day of WorldSBK action in 2020 has been fruitful and exciting from start to finish, with numerous riders seemingly in contention for strong performances at the Yamaha Finance Australian Round. The 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship saw the top 12 riders covered by just under a second after the first day, whilst there were plenty of talking points right through pitlane. Finishing Friday on top was Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati), and the British rookie had nearly half a second on his nearest rival: “I was doing a race run to see how the tyres were; I wasn’t really abusing them, in the beginning. The first run was a bit of shakedown really, I was doing my thing and just making sure the tyres were working well, as we changed the set-up from the test, and it has improved quite a lot; I was happy with that. We are losing quite a bit of time in the first sector compared to the Yamahas, so we need to improve there but I think it is a little bit more of the characteristics of the bike.” Despite all of his tenacity, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) was far from happy on the first day, although he was second come overall: “I’m not really happy because I push on some laps, but I feel some problems. The bike is sliding aggressively which is my big problem now; I don’t feel good turning the bike. In the last corner, this is a big problem especially. We try a new set-up and new tyres, which felt good. Tomorrow we will try to make a big step.” Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) on the other hand was far more upbeat and was ready to fight hard this weekend, stating: “It seems that we improved a lot. Last year we struggled a lot to be honest, only in the second race I improved a lot. This year we are a lot stronger. It can be another story and it should be another story. To be honest, if you look on the paper now, my last sector doesn’t look very good. On my fastest lap, I had a massive moment coming out of the final corner, so I’m not really worried that it’s going to be my weakest sector. But everybody loves their own sector on this circuit and for me that’s sector one.” Pulling no punches, a positive first day of the weekend saw Leon Haslam come out fighting inside the top four. He states his intentions to be battling for victory come the races: “Honestly, I think we are close to fighting at the front. Sitting on the grid tomorrow, the concentration is to win. Right now, we still have some good practices to find a good setting, which will help us for the race. The target is always to win, but we will see, for sure it is never easy. The Ducati is super strong, especially with Scott this year, Jonny is there every year and the Yamahas are looking strong too. It is never easy but so far, so good.” Another impressive display came from Loris Baz, as the Frenchman shone and made it three Yamahas inside the top five: “The last section is the most from the tyre, so when you are doing a long run in preparation for the race, you have to take care in this section, as this is the one where you will kill the tyre. We just did long runs as at the start of the session, we had a technical issue so we couldn’t do more or less half of the session. The pace seems good and it is something we’ve worked on since Monday. I am really happy so far and anything is possible, that is the cool thing with this sport. I don’t have any targets apart from to be as fast as possible and if we can fight for victory here then great, or maybe the next round.”

2020 Phillip Island World Supersport FP2 Result: Krummenacher Makes The Slicks Work Jared Earle on Fri, 2020-02-28
In a session split by two red flags, one of which was resolved by a man on a scooter chasing birds off the track, the dry weather gave riders a chance to try out the new for 2020 slick tyres, which let Randy Krummenacher set a lap that was quicker than the previous race lap record and within four tenths of a second of Sam Lowes's 2013 outright lap record. Krummenacher's switch to MV Agusta shows potential, with his teammate Raffaele de Rosa third quickest. Former Moto2 rider Andrea Locatelli was second quickest, swapping the top spot with Krummenacher throughout the session.

Rea against Sykes: "he hit me, and it's not the first time he does it": "It had already happened in the past and he will do it again. I was in front and he hit me. It was the first lap, of the first race of the year. Then I fell forcing to recover "
Tom Sykes: "Rea's maneuver was ridiculous": "If you want to criticize me, then do it, but he slowed me down that stretch and almost threw Razgatlioglu out at the start"
Davies: "I had no grip today, and it was the bike's fault.": "At the start of the race, I wasn't able to keep a good pace. In these conditions, if you try to push, you kill the tires."
Fantastic start to new WorldSBK season in Phillip Island. Scott Redding is now a podium finisher in 125GP, Moto2, MotoGP, BSB and WSBK. All at the age of 27.
Dosoli (Yamaha): “We knew we could fight it out with Rea. Now it’s certain ": "Razgatlıoğlu very good at managing the tyres, Van der Mark achieved less than he deserved. The team is mature and now gets 100% out of the Yamaha R1"
Bautista: "I’m not thinking of Rea but of myself, sixth place was the best I could do today": "In the race I kept my pace while the others went slower to preserve their tyres. The crash in Superpole? It was either on the ground or against the wall"
Razgatlioglu: "I'm first in the world championship? I wish it wasn't so strange": "At Phillip Island, tyre management is everything, doing it well in the last few laps was crucial. Rea surprised me, he crashed but he got back up to fight"

Tyre life the only concern for Haslam 29.02.2020 BSN Gordon Ritchie at Phillip Island ![](https://www.bikesportnews.com/uploads/news_images/2SNAP_00101672-477.jpg) In the first WorldSBK outing for the all-new Honda Fireblade, Leon Haslam was in the mix for a race win despite some issues with throttle response in the faster corners, right up until his rear tyre cried enough and he dropped back to finish a ‘whole’ 3.910 seconds from race winner, Toprak Razgatlioglu. It was stirring stuff for the truly, madly deeply official HRC Honda team in it first race with a bike that will form the platform of all their main race series outside of the ivory tower of MotoGP. The good news for TT, Endurance and all national race classes is that so far it looks like it is already well on the money. It should be, as there is a lot of racebike in the outwardly conventional roadbike. Nothing proves racing ability like racing, so even though Haslam has been testing well, and qualified fifth in Superpole today, he only had issues that familiarity and some full race distances in the heat of battle should help sort out fully. “Midway through the race I was struggling a little bit with rear grip, especially on the left hand side,” Haslam told bikesportnews.com. A little bit with managing the power as it came in strong too. Honestly, from my side, I felt like we had a good pace to win, but in the back of my mind we were always conscious about the rear tyre, especially after lap one when it was spinning a little bit too much. “It was kind of trying it manage it but in the end it wasn’t enough. With four or five to go we fell of the cliff.” Haslam looked almost at home in the fight for the win for most of the race, and said so too. “From lap one we struggled in some areas with rear grip, but even with this problem I found it easy to be in this group. But when the tyre went, it was impossible.” Haslam also learned valuable lessons about the character of his machine in a fight, not just during a race simulation, or in the quest for a single fast lap. “Handling wise I am pretty happy with it, we just missed a little bit on smooth delivery of the faster corners. Obviously this will help the tyre life so this is one clear area where we can improve the bike. I am happy to be battling with that leading group with five laps to go.” Haslam now knows some clear areas to work on for short term and long term gains, especially with throttle reaction in those long corners. “We have had the bike working better in the area that we struggled with today, so we have the understanding to get that back, and then that will make it a lot easier to ride with the guys, especially with this circuit. “A lot of the cornering is with the gas here as we need to make that as smooth as possible. Honestly, I am really happy. I cannot fault the effort that Honda and HRC have put in. The project is fantastic and I really felt that I could have won that race so just to have that thought in my head, that we can go into tomorrow with a smile and solve a few of the issues the we will see what we can do.” With ten laps of the Superpole race to come next, maybe Haslam is all ready to make the podium leap with fewer tyre duration worries to think of. Ten laps are a lot fewer then 22. “The tyre drop off in the ten lap race is going to be a benefit for me right now but we are still lacking in those corners even when we have got grip on lap one,” he stated. “So we have got a clear area we have to improve so even with that problem we are still as quick as the others.” During braking and passing, Haslam found his bike has real ability already. “Top speed is OK, braking is not so bad, but it all goes together. If you cannot get of the corer then you are too far behind when you hit your brakes, so it is a bit of a yo-yo effect. But, when I made a mistake it was quite easy to close the gap. Pace-wise I am really happy.” A long term WorldSBK rider, with huge experience of many other classes and categories, Haslam thinks that the 2020 series is shaping up as a well-balanced prospect. Five riders and five bikes, all fighting up front until Sykes’ tyre dropped off. “Fantastic!” said Haslam. “Honda, BMW leading, Ducati, Yamaha, Kawi, it is fantastic. Every one has got its strength and we knew certain bikes go well here for tyre life, etc., so that fact that we have been throw into this at this stage trying to figure fundamentals out and still being able to run the pace with the front guys is very promising.”

American star Gerloff to miss remainder of Phillip Island event Saturday, 29 February 2020 ![](https://photos.worldsbk.com/2020/02/29/06371_dcp_r1_ambience_full.jpg) After a crash in Warm Up, the rookie will take no further part in his WorldSBK debut weekend After a crash in morning Warm Up at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team) will not take part for the remainder of the Yamaha Finance Australian Round. The American star collided with Sandro Cortese (OUTDO Kawasaki TPR) at Turn 4, with the German rider collecting the rookie with both tumbling to through the gravel. Garrett Gerloff is however conscious. Gerloff was initially taken to the Medical Centre where he was diagnosed with concussion; he will be transferred to hospital by helicopter. Gerloff had made quite an impression on his WorldSBK debut, with the 24-year-old storming up from 17th on the grid to seventh before his tyres began to slow him in the final eight laps. Nonetheless, he collected two points in 14th.
