David Emmett A very good point. And Guintoli is still in Q1 anyway, so nothing lost.

Rossi, last Yamaha: "Technically helps to understand, but I struggle while braking": "In this situation there are pros and cons. Unfortunately I am not in place yet, but if the race is dry I am not wrong on the pass"
Jorge Lorenzo: “A very tough day for me as I always find the mixed conditions difficult. I was losing a lot of time. Now we start 19th which is not ideal, but I am hopeful for good weather. If it is dry in WUP and for the race, we can improve on the results of previous races.”
marcmarquez93 has now taken pole position at 20 different circuits. Fellow Honda legend micksdoohan holds the outright record with pole at 24 different circuits!
David Emmett: Honda wins the constructors, not a surprise. Quartararo wins rookie of the year, also not a surprise but an outstanding achievement. He also passes Rossi in the championship. Rossi now 3rd Yamaha. Been a tough few races

I was able to have fun with the Honda – Lorenzo 20.10.2019 BSN Aaron Rowles ![](https://www.bikesportnews.com/uploads/news_images/825909.jpg) Repsol Honda MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo admitted that he had fun with the Honda for the first time since moving to the Japanese factory, despite finishing the Japanese Grand Prix in seventeenth place in Motegi. The Spaniard has been having a season from hell since his high profile move from Ducati in the winter and a mid-season back injury left the former World Champion looking a shadow of his former self. On the face of it, today’s race where Lorenzo finished in seventeenth place, forty seconds off the race win would suggest another tough day for Lorenzo, however, the Spaniard was somewhat surprisingly happy after the race, explain he enjoyed his best feeling on the RC213V since the move, despite the finishing position. “We took a small step forward with the bike, especially with regards to gaining confidence,” said Lorenzo. “In the early stages of the race, I struggled because I lost lots of time with a full tank, about two seconds per lap. In fact, I made a change to the ergonomics during the warmup and I had to adapt to the situation. The bike was still, and I wasn’t able to take the corners how I wanted. “In the second part of the race, when the fuel level dropped after the twelfth lap, I was able to have fun with the Honda, finding the sensations I had been missing for a long time. “In fact, I was fast, racing a second faster. Too bad I wasn’t able to ride like this in the beginning. Maybe instead of finishing 40 seconds back, I could have finished 30 back. This is the shortest gap for me since I returned to the track after the injury. So, I am happy with how I rode, even if the results don’t prove me right.” With the news that Johann Zarco will be sitting in for Taka Nakagami for the final three races of the season, many have said that it is being used as a way to pressure Lorenzo, with the Frenchman potentially replacing him in 2020. When asked about that and the chances of moving next season, Lorenzo said: “There are no other options than to continue with Honda. In the end, I signed a two-year contract last year. My goal is to be competitive with this bike.”

Dovizioso was braking ‘like a stupid rider’ 20.10.2019 BSN Aaron Rowles ![](https://www.bikesportnews.com/uploads/news_images/825906.jpg) Factory Ducati MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso said he was braking ‘like a stupid rider’ as he attempted to hold off Maverick Vinales and hunt down Fabio Quartararo in the closing stages, as the Italian returned to the podium in third place at Motegi. The Italian worked his way forwards progressively through the race, after struggling in the early stages of the race on a full tank of fuel. As the race went on, Dovizioso found more pace and into third position, holding off a challenge from Maverick Vinales Dovizioso said he and his Ducati team need to struggle as he really struggled in the early stages of the race when the grip levels were high for everybody. “It was a bit strange race, we had a lot of questions marks before the race,” said the Italian. “Tyre choice, the set-up, also in the warmup I didn’t feel good, so I wasn’t so comfortable before the race to make this kid of race. So, about that we are happy, also because the gap is not that big at the end of the race. “But we struggle in the first half of the race when the grip was good from everybody, but we wasn’t fast enough. I was losing too much in the middle of the corners, I couldn’t be faster than Morbidelli. “So, lap by lap the tyre dropped and my bike worked better and better and better. I was able to brake better and my lap time improve. So really happy about the last half of the race, because my feeling was really good, and my lap time was good. “But we are not fast when the grip is good, and this is something we need to analyse and study because like in the practice, we struggle to be in the top like at the beginning of the race. A bit disappointed about that, like when you see the end of the race, I was really fast, but this is the situation and we need to analyse.” Dovizioso admitted that he was playing around with the mapping on his bike later in the race, but his late race pace wasn’t because of a change in mapping, instead down to some caviler braking on his part. “I was playing because everybody was on the limit, but I wasn’t faster for that,” he said. “I was faster just because I took too many risks and I brake like a stupid rider. I lock the front too many times, but I saw Fabio really struggling so that was my good point in the race. “Compared to everybody, the braking was really good, especially in turn eleven I was able to gain a lot, so I was pushing in that area and I was able to be smooth. “Fortunately, in the race, when I wasn’t able to be fast at the beginning, I was calm, always riding in a smooth way. So, at the end when the bike work a bit better, I was able to be fast.” With a third-place finish today, Dovizioso claimed his one hundredth career podium and further strengthened his grip on second place in the World Championship. Looking like he will better his points total from last year, but finish further behind Marquez, Dovizioso was asked if Marquez has simply been too good this year. “This is the reality. I think we have a good gap with Rins and Vinales, but the next three races I think we need to be smart, because they’re not that good for you,” said Dovizioso. “So, we have to work in the right way and make the points, as you never know, anything can happen. It’s important to gain some points here, we didn’t gain a lot, but at the end it was important to stay in front of them and we did it. Let’s see in Phillip Island the weather and what we can do.”

Faster pace causes fuel issues for Marquez 20.10.2019 BSN Aaron Rowles ![](https://www.bikesportnews.com/uploads/news_images/826094.jpg) Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez said his faster pace in Motegi caused a scare with fuel levels as he cruised to victory in Japan. On the back of retaining his World Championship last time out in Thailand, Marquez took pole position in the mixed conditions on Saturday and made the most of his perfect starting position, aiming to clear off from the start. Edging away from the chasing pack, Marquez continued to manage the gap behind him. When it looked as if it was just a case of keeping it upright, Marquez explained that his fuel alarm popped up, giving him a late scare. Despite this, Marquez managed to hold on for the win and continue his stunning run of top two finishes. “Happy for the victory of course here in japan, but the rain tyres were just to prepare for the race,” said the 26-year-old. “Was a little bit cloudy and you never know what will happen. So, we scrubbed the tyres in case of a flag to flag the tyres are ready to attack from the first lap. Then from the grid I saw that many riders were with the soft rear, that was the biggest doubt, but I believe in the medium. “The issue in the race was we predict, on the team because we did a great job and they did a great job to analyse all the things, and we predict a [1:]46 low pace, but the problem was I was able to ride a [1:}45 high in a good way. “So sometimes this is good news, but this time it was not so good, because we knew with the fuel it was a little bit on the limit. I tried to control during all the race, I tried to be smooth, tried to be on this [1:]46 low. “Then when I take two seconds, I said I will try to manage the distance. Lucky for me, because when one and a half lap remains, the fuel alarm was on the dashboard. When I have the fuel alarm, it reminds me I have three laps of fuel, then I tried to manage and control enough to pass the line in first position.” Marquez had been speaking about how he was expecting a tough race and wasn’t sure if he had the pace to challenge for the victory. In spite of what he said he was expecting, it was yet another win for the Spaniard and when asked if he expected it to be tougher than it actually was, the Honda man said: “Today the strategy of the race was to follow someone and attack at the end or push from the beginning. “I said okay, today I feel really good in the warmup, so I will push from the beginning. For that reason, I overtake Fabio so quick when he overtook me, so that was the main strategy. Then I start to push, and I see that he was fast because he was with the soft rear, but I keep going and going and step by step I increase the advantage, when I take 2.5 seconds, I start to manage. “Then in a few laps he was very fast, but I go down to a 46 low and I control in a good way. But all the Repsol Honda team did a great job because on Friday we were far but yesterday we did a great improvement.”
