Mat Oxley All Ducatis ran without fork wings in FP1. The more downforce aero you have the harder it is to make the bike turn & change direction - & Portimao is all about turning & changing direction. Also, it's mostly not a wheelie circuit, so less need for anti-wheelie downforce

Mat Oxley MotoGP is all in the details. KTM front fender features cooling vent to help keep front tyre temperature & pressure down. Cold & sandy this morning, so Miller had a go with the vent sealed. (And not just with a strip of duct tape!) Wonder what difference it made?

2024 Portimão Moto3 Practice 1 Result: Alonso On A Roll By Zara Daniela | Fri, 22/Mar/2024
Due to sandy conditions red flagging their morning session, the lightweight class were only able to take to the track on Friday afternoon and it quickly turned into the David Alonso Show. The Colombian led throughout the session and was over a second faster at one point, but Joel Kelso eventually caught up to reduce his advantage to a mere three hundredths of a second. Matteo Bertelle in third was over half a second slower, with Jose Antonio Rueda and Riccardo Rossi completing the top five – the Spaniard not losing any of his speed after being unwell in the morning.
Filippo Farioli in sixth position ended the session a full second behind the leader, although minimal gaps separated the rest of the top 10. Rookie Angel Piqueras continued to impress in seventh position, ahead of Scott Ogden and Dani Holgado, with Stefano Nepa rounding out the top 10 places. The remaining top 14 positions after the first practice session were occupied by Joel Esteban, Ryusei Yamanaka, Ivan Ortola and Vicente Perez, while the likes of Tatsuki Suzuki, David Muñoz and Taiyo Furusato seemed to struggle outside of the top 20.

2024 Portimão Moto3 Free Practice Result: Session Cancelled Due To Track Conditions By Zara Daniela | Fri, 22/Mar/2024
It looked like it was going to be a slow start for the lightweight class as no riders were tempted to head out on a rather dirty track with damp patches after overnight rain, but the fun – or lack of – was cut short by a red flag with 12 minutes remaining. The session was not restarted and marshals headed out to help clean the track.

Bastianini sets a blistering time to top Friday The Italian ends Friday quickest and will head straight to Q2 ahead of Miller and Marc Marquez after a hectic end to the session It was an important Practice session with the top 10 riders earning their spot to go straight to Q2 on Saturday. After setting an early time attack, Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) set a blisteringly quick time to end Friday in first position. The Italian was ahead of Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) who ended the session 0.118 from the top spot, ending Friday in second. Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) crashed for the first time this season onboard the Ducati, with minutes left on the clock, however, the eight-time World Champion ended the day in a classy third. The session began with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at the top, first Miller and then his teammate Brad Binder. Miller had an eventful start to the session, crashing at turn five in the first 10 minutes of Practice. However, KTM’s thunder was soon stolen by Ducati as Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Ducati) had their go at taking the top spot as riders looked at getting an early banker lap. It was a thrilling end to the session, with riders opting for a time attack, to claim their spot in Q2. However, as riders pushed for a lap time, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) and Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) crashed within seconds of each other. This was followed by Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing) and Luca Marini (Repsol Honda Team) minutes later. This left riders only a few minutes to improve, with Martin ending the session in fourth. The Spaniard was ahead of Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who sneaked inside the top five in the closing minutes. Marco Bezzecchi (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) ends Friday positively – finishing the day in sixth. The VR46 Academy rider was ahead of Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). Fabio Quartararo was ninth ahead of his Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ teammate, Alex Rins who rounds out the top 10 places. This leaves some big names to go through Q1 including Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), Alex Marquez and Espargaro.

Mat Oxley Zarco on the other hand is positive! Says there are good things about the Honda. Some better than the Ducati! The gap isn’t big and “We can’t see everything in black”. Nice quote

2024 Portimão MotoGP Qualifying Result: Surprises Both At The Top And In The Gravel By Zara Daniela | Sat, 23/Mar/2024 - 04:55 Super Saturday lived up to its name already from qualifying, but it was equally about the drama in the gravel trap than the battle for pole. With both Marc Marquez and Brad Binder crashing on their first flying laps and having to take a big detour through pitlane, two big hitters were already looking unlikely to be part of the fight and it left the stage open for Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin to show off with their speed. The world champion swiftly claimed top spot after the first run, while rival Martin was frustrated to have his top two time cancelled due to exceeding track limits, but with several such infringements early on, only a handful of riders had times on the board with three minutes left of the session.
Enea Bastianini wasn’t one of those riders, but the Italian came out of nowhere to claim top spot in the final shootout. The last couple of minutes were slightly anticlimactic, as there seemed to be no real threat to the Ducati man’s position, only Maverick Viñales finding some late pace to come within eight hundredths of a second of pole. That allowed Bastianini to claim his first pole position since mid-2022 and open the front row of the grid ahead of Viñales and Martin.
Aprilia’s late charge dropped Bagnaia to the second row, which he will be sharing with the top KTM of Jack Miller and Marco Bezzecchi, who seems to be finding his feet a bit more on the GP23. Pedro Acosta provided the entertainment in Q1, only Alex Marquez able to dethrone him in the end, and the rookie went on to improve his best qualifying position in the premier class with seventh in Portimão. Marc Marquez had a bit of a task on his hands in regrouping from his early tumble, on a new bike, with new kit and only one flying lap, and seemed quite frustrated to only find himself eighth on the grid, in familiar company from Fabio Quartararo. Binder’s recovery also ended with a rather disappointing tenth place, the South-African sharing fourth row with Alex Rins and Alex Marquez, after the Q1 leader failed to set a time in Q2.
Meanwhile, Aleix Espargaro was the big victim of Q1, the Spaniard missing out by a pretty sizeable two tenths of a second and setting for a fifth row start alongside Fabio Di Giannantonio and home favourite Miguel Oliveira. Raul Fernandez, Franco Morbidelli and Augusto Fernandez never really looked like a threat for Q2 and completed row six, while the four Hondas are grouped together at the back of the grid.
