Holgado takes Sepang lap record ahead of Q2 The Spaniard topped the timesheets after three practice sessions with Öncü and Masia in hot pursuit Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) shot to the top of the timesheets during Saturday morning's Practice 3 at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia after his 2:11.139 saw him take the new all-time lap record with qualifying just around the corner. Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) put in a solid lap in the closing stages as the Turk heads into Q2 having shown strong pace from the off. Championship leader Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) is also looking in fine form in Malaysia. The Spaniard finished 0.434s away from Holgado to take P3 on combined timings. Next up was Masia's closest title rival Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) who comes to Malaysia with fire in his belly ahead of the title fight. The Japanese rider finished just ahead of Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets - MSI) who rounded out the top five ahead of Joel Kelso (CFMoto Racing PruestelGP) and Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing). Matteo Bertelle (Rivacold Snipers Team) took 8th place ahead of Ivan Ortola (Angeluss MTA Team) with Romano Fenati (Rivacold Snipers Team) rounding out the top 10. With the top 14 now decided, the stage is set ahead of qualifying action later on. It was a good day for Fillip Farioli (Red Bull KTM Tech3) as the rookie bagged a Q2 spot in 11th place with David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports), Ryusei Yamanaka (GASGAS Aspar Team), and Riccardo Rossi (SIC58 Squadra Corse) taking the final Q2 spots.

Aldeguer leads the way as Arbolino faces Q1 The SpeedUp rider found himself half a second clear of the field after a Practice 3 masterclass Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp) found an extra gear on Saturday morning at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia as he moved the goalposts with an impressive 2:05.319. Somkiat Chanta (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) was the closest contender to the Spaniard – almost half a second back in 2nd place! Just behind the Thai rider was Jake Dixon (Inde GASGAS Aspar Team) who's showing strong form at the Sepang International Circuit. Championship leader Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) finished just 0.043s shy of the top three in fourth place and with his title rival Tony Arbolino (Elf MarcVDS Racing Team) facing Q1, the Spaniard hopes of wrapping up the title here in Malaysia have got a little stronger. Aron Canet (Pons Wegow Los40) rounded out the top five ahead of Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing) and Celestino Vietti (Fantic Racing). The Belgian Barry Baltus (Fieten Olie Racing GP) was next up in P8 with Filip Salac (QJMOTOR Gresini Racing Moto2™) and Ai Ogura (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) - who failed to improve in Practice 3 - rounding out the top 10. Sam Lowes (Elf MarcVDS Racing Team) bagged himself a Q2 spot as he took 11th place with the Spanish trio of Sergio Garcia (Pons Wegow Los40), Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools SpeedUp), and Manuel Gonzalez (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team) taking the final Q2 spots inside the top 14.

Alex Marquez victorious as Martin closes in on Bagnaia The Gresini rider took a brilliant victory in the Sprint as Martin's P2 sees the gap between him and Bagnaia close to 11 points ahead of Sunday's Sepang showdown The final chapter of the 2023 Championship story is underway and the momentum swung a little more in the direction of the purple corner in Saturday's Tissot Sprint. With Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) taking a classy, dominant victory, it left Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) to battle it out as the former claimed P2, with polesitter Pecco having to settle for P3. Now, the gap ahead of Sunday's race is just 11 points. The battle commences… It was a cracking start for the Ducati factory duo as Bagnaia led teammate Enea Bastianini into Turn 1, but Alex Marquez quickly joined the party into the first corner as he slotted himself into P3 to pick off Bastianini for P2 a few corners later. Martin had dropped down to 4th place on Lap 1 but pounced on Bastianini in the final sector. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo of Brad Binder and Jack Miller took advantage as they quickly followed pursuit and demoted the Italian further. Bagnaia held strong in the lead until the end of the second lap when a last-corner dive bomb from Alex Marquez saw the Spaniard briefly take the lead for half a corner. Having ran wide the #73 then fell into the clutches of Martin who was eager to latch onto his title rival Bagnaia. The pair swapped and changed positions over the next few corners until Marquez eventually made a move stick on his compatriot and set his sights on the race leader. Marquez kept the pressure on as Bagnaia could feel the Gresini rider breathing down his neck with the chequered flag drawing closer and closer. Marquez made his move with four and a half laps remaining, which invited Martin to pounce on Pecco who had no answer for either of the Spaniards. Marquez put the hammer down in the lead and began to stretch out the leading group. The Gresini rider was untouchable at the front as he went on to take victory by an impressive 1.589s. Martin also had the bit between his teeth as he slowly pulled away from the factory Ducati behind him. The #89 finished 1.5s ahead of Bagnaia in 2nd place as the Champion sealed a damage limitation job in P3. The return of the beast Meanwhile, Bastianini had picked off the KTMs and made his way back onto the rear wheel of his teammate. With Bagnaia struggling for pace Bastianini played the team game behind the #1 and remained in his shadow until the chequered flag came out. The Beast did come under pressure in the final moments as Binder had found some late Sprint pace to latch himself onto the back of the factory Ducati riders. Bastianini ran wide at the final corner which invited Binder through, however, the Italian got the cut-back and used the Ducati power to full advantage as he snatched 4th place back on the drag to the line. One second back from this battle was the other KTM Factory Racing rider of Miller. The Aussie kept himself within the mix for most of the Sprint to bring home a solid 6th-place finish. Another second back was Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) who fended off Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) to take 7th place. The Italian's teammate Luca Marini took the final Sprint point in 9th ahead of Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) who rounded out the top 10.

Veijer strikes gold to beat Sasaki and Masia in Malaysia The Husqvarna rider becomes the first-ever Dutch rider to win a Moto3™ World Championship race as the title race takes another twist Moto3™ action at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia served as the perfect appetiser on Sunday's billing at the Sepang International Circuit and it was Dutch Rookie Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) who stole the headlines with a hard-fought debut victory. Veijer came out on top after going head-to-head with his teammate Ayumu Sasaki and the latter's title rival Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) as the gap between the top two in the title race drops to 13 points with two races to go. Masia started from pole position but a mad rush into Turn 1 saw the Championship leader drop down to P2 as Veijer came charging through into Turn 1. Ivan Ortola (Angeluss MTA Team) was looking lively as Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Sasaki put themselves into contention. Masia followed for a lap but then made his move on Veijer whilst Sasaki and Öncü were on a charge. Sasaki carved his way through the pack like a knife through butter and took the lead from Masia to make his presence known and initiate battle. The pair proceeded to swap paintwork as the laps ticked away and a freight train of riders queued up behind the leading duo. A crash for David Alonso (GASGAS Aspar Team) saw Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) also crash as two title contenders went down together, with Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia), Riccardo Rossi (Sic58 Squadra Corse) and Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets - MSI) also caught up in the incident. This left a six-bike battle for victory as Sasaki, Masia, Veijer, Öncü, Matteo Bertelle (Rivacold Snipers Team), and Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) were all scrapping it out for Malaysian Grand Prix glory. It was getting all getting very hot at the front until it boiling point ahead of the penultimate lap. The group was reduced to just three after a final corner collision between Ajo teammates Öncü and Rueda saw both riders go down, with Bertelle also getting caught up in the incident - that dropped the Italian to P9. This left Masia, Sasaki, and Veijer to scrap it out for victory with two laps remaining. Veijer led the way at the start of the final lap as he fended off attacks from his teammate Sasaki, with the Dutch rider leading the way into the final sector. After a strong defensive performance from the rookie, he fended off Sasaki and Masia - who gave everything they had into the final corner - for a famous first lightweight class win. Six and a half seconds back from the battle for victory was Ivan Ortola who fended off David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports), Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing), and Xavier Artigas (CFMoto Racing PruestelGP) for 4th place. Joel Kelso (CFMoto Racing PruestelGP) was the final rider in that battle as the Aussie took 8th. Just over three seconds further back was the Italian Filippo Farioli (Red Bull KTM Tech3) who finished in 9th. The Rookie got the better of Ryusei Yamanaka (GASGAS Aspar Team) and Matteo Bertelle who finished in 10th and 11th respectively. After hitting the deck with his teammate Deniz Öncü rejoined the race to finish in 12th. The Turk crossed the line half a second up the road from Vicente Perez (BOE Motorsports) who bagged P13 ahead of the VisionTrack Racing Team duo of Scott Ogden and Joshua Whatley.

Aldeguer unbeatable as Acosta clinches the 2023 title in Sepang It’s a third win of the year for the #54 but the headlines belong to the #37 as a P2 finish hands Acosta a second World Championship title Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) is the 2023 Moto2™ World Champion thanks to a P2 finish at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia. The Spaniard becomes the youngest Moto2™ title winner – taking that accolade off Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) – as Fermin Aldeguer (Beta Tools Speed Up) strides to a commanding third win of the campaign. Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing) kept his composure to secure a hard-earned debut Moto2™ rostrum in P3. There was drama from the off as polesitter Aldeguer and Manuel Gonzalez (Correos Prepago Yamaha VR46 Team) made contact on the exit of Turn 1 which saw the latter crash out. Thankfully everyone managed to avoid the Spaniard but one rider who had to take evading action was Arbolino. The Italian lost ground and was down to P7, with Acosta capitalising on Gonzalez’s misfortunes to climb up to P2. On Lap 2, desperate to pick off the riders ahead of him, Arbolino’s slim title hopes then all but vanished. The #14 made small contact with Ai Ogura’s (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) rear wheel at Turn 9, then made more contact with Aron Canet (Pons Wegow Los40), as Arbolino ran onto the grass. That dropped him outside the top 20. Back at the front, Aldeguer was operating on another level. By Lap 4, the Spaniard was over two seconds clear of Acosta, who in turn was over a second up the road from third place Ramirez. Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools Speed Up) was P4 and had Ogura and Jake Dixon (Inde GASGAS Aspar Team) for company, with Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team) and Somkiat Chantra (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) just slightly adrift of the fight for P4. Aldeguer’s lead kept growing and with seven laps left, six seconds split him and Acosta. Ramirez was holding Lopez, Ogura and Dixon a second behind him, with Ogura beginning to climb all over the back of Lopez’s rear wheel. With six to go, Ogura was through and then set about chasing Ramirez for the final spot on the podium. With three to go, Ramirez was coming under increasing pressure. Ogura was taking two or three tenths a second a lap out of the Spaniard’s advantage but up the road, there were no issues whatsoever for Aldeguer and the Champion elect Acosta. Aldeguer took the chequered flag a sensational 7.1s clear of anyone to claim a dominant victory, but it was all eyes on the rider in P2 as Acosta crossed the line to become the 2023 Moto2™ World Champion and a two-time Grand Prix Champion after his 2021 Moto3™ success. Take a bow Pedro, what a season. In the end, Ramirez did manage to fend off Ogura to claim a first Moto2™ podium, with the latter coming from P13 on the grid to challenge for a podium, as Dixon rounded out the top five. Chantra and Lowes take home P6 and P7, with Joe Roberts (Italtrans Racing Team), Albert Arenas (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and the recovering Arbolino rounding out the top 10. A disappointing day for the #14 sees his title hopes disappear for 2023, but he'll be back stronger in 2024 Barry Baltus (Fieten Olie Racing GP), Jeremy Alcoba (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™), Alex Escrig (Forward Team), Filip Salac (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) and Dennis Foggia (Italtrans Racing Team) were the final points scorers in Malaysia. With the title wrapped up, Acosta will head to Qatar with only one thing in mind: winning. So will the likes of Aldeguer as we get set for what could be a spell-binding end to the 2023 Moto2™ World Championship story. resources.motogp.pulselive.com/photo-resources/2023/11/12/fdcfc013-ed84-4645-962a-a0c18403bb3e/_DSC8369-1-.jpg?width=1440&height=900

PECCO vs MARTIN: Title fight heats up as Bastianini blasts back to glory The first time we’ve seen the two contenders go toe-to-toe for some time sees early race fireworks light up Sepang as Bastianini and Alex Marquez pull clear on Sunday Pecco vs Martin: it’s official. The fight for the 2023 FIM MotoGP™ World Championship is now a duel, and it’s a duel split by just 14 points as we head into the final two race weekends. It was also an early race duel at Sepang as the two went toe-to-toe in the fight for the podium, with Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) defending with everything he had against now sole challenger, Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing). But that was the fight for third! Up ahead, Enea Bastianini’s (Ducati Lenovo Team) fantastic return to form continued as the number 23 moved through to the lead, set some absolutely searing pace, and wasn’t to be seen again. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) kept him honest enough, however, with the number 73 following up his Sprint win with another Grand Prix podium. It was almost three abreast into Turn 1 once the lights went out, with the front row side-by-side. Bastianini played it safe, Bagnaia was on the outside, and it was Martin who let the brakes off – diving up the inside to very briefly take the holeshot. But he was deep and Bagnaia took the chance to try and cut back in, but the #1 wasn’t in the postcode of the apex either. He got back past Martin but Bastianini was already through, as was Alex Marquez. Pecco held on to third against Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) but Martin wasn’t so lucky, getting shuffled back behind the Italian and left with a little more work to do from fifth And so Bastianini led Alex Marquez, with a small but increasing gap back to some stunning early race fireworks. Once Martin was able to get back past Bezzecchi, he was right on the tail of Bagnaia and the teams, factory and grandstands held their breath as the show began. The number 89 was all over the number 1 but he attacked and was denied, attacked and was denied as the two scythed round Sepang near side-by-side. It was stunning, and it could prove important in terms of more than just points. On Sundays when they've both seen the flag, the reigning Champion has only finished ahead of Martin once since the Red Bull Ring – on the day of Johann Zarco's history-making win in Australia. Bagnaia hasn’t beaten Martin in a Sprint since Catalunya. But at Sepang, the reigning Champion also turned the tables in qualifying, nabbing pole from Martin and outqualifying the number 89 for the first time since Barcelona. From that huge shot of adrenaline though, it became an ebb of tension as the laps ticked down. Bastianini led Alex Marquez, both in some clear air. Bagnaia was in a “safe” third, and Martin a safe fourth, as the battle behind was the next. By five laps to go, Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) had arrived at Bezzecchi, and this time the Yamaha rider struck quickly, slicing through almost immediately. The he was left trying to hold off the mighty power of the Ducati out the final corner and down the main straight into Turn 1, but it was mission accomplished – Quartararo was up into the top five as Bezzecchi officially dropped out on title contention. At the front, Bastianini pounded on. With just over a second in hand, sometimes up to 1.5, the Beast was keeping very calm as he carried on – and very, very fast. He crossed the line for his first win since Aragon last year with a second and a half in hand, becoming the seventh different winner this season. Alex Marquez returned to the Grand Prix podium in second, Bagnaia took that vital third, and Martin was forced to settle for fourth to end the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia 14 points adrift. Still, there are 74 left in play. Quartararo took fifth from Bezzecchi, with Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™’s Franco Morbidelli putting on a charge into seventh, with Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) P8. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) was hot on the heels on the Australian, and they had Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) for company too as he completed the top ten. Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing), Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing), Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), Augusto Fernandez (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3) and his teammate Pol Espargaro completed the points – with one notable name missing out on some being Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) as he crashed out of the battle with Miller and Diggia, rider ok.
