The full circuit at Donington Park has been completely resurfaced for the first time in more than 20 years as part of major developments at the track where #WorldSBK had its first race in 1988 WorldSBK will visit the iconic venue in a few weeks with a brand new surface adding to the challenge Donington Park hosts the next round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at the start of July and there will be an extra unknown heading to the historic British circuit. Ahead of the 2023 motorsport season in the United Kingdom, the full circuit at Donington Park was resurfaced for the first time in more than 20 years as part of major developments to the track where WorldSBK had its first race in 1988. The process to resurface the 2.5-mile circuit started by taking 40mm of material off the top surface allowing the new surface to be laid down. This was to allow the removal of undulations as well as to optimise drainage in the event of rain, while the works also helped with the camber of corners. The resurfacing took place in two sections, with the surface initially laid in the pit lane and from the Craner Curves to the start-finish straight. After that, the rest of the circuit was completed. There was a sustainability push to the works too with materials that were taken up set to be used around the Donington circuit in order to benefit other areas of the circuit including campsites and pathways. A series of tests were held following the resurfacing, including a day dedicated to motorbikes, before racing events took place. The British Superbike championship raced there in May on the Grand Prix circuit, which WorldSBK will use in July. Lap records were broken at this event, with the new lap record around one second quicker compared to the previous one. MSV Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer said: “Donington Park is an extremely important circuit in MSV’s portfolio, hosting both World Superbike and British Superbike events, where some of the best international riders push their 220bhp race bikes to the absolute limit. With just two tyre contact patches, the size of the palm of a hand, to be able to rely on the grip and consistency of the surface is critical. I was at Donington for the British Superbike weekend and heard nothing but the highest praise for our new surface, which was immensely satisfying. Riders loved the increased grip, in both dry and wet conditions, and its smoothness. Just a few weeks before, the top British Touring Car Championship drivers echoed these sentiments.” The existing lap record for WorldSBK at Donington is held by Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) after he posted a 1’26.080s to take pole position last year, while Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) holds the race lap record with a 1’26.767s from last year’s Tissot Superpole Race. If the conditions are dry, could both of these records fall on the new Donington surface?

Bautista buoyant after Day 1 at Misano: "Adaptation is maybe better than expected, I feel good!" Tuesday, 20 June 2023 The reigning WorldSBK Champion returned to MotoGP™ action at Misano on the Ducati Desmosedici GP Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) returned to MotoGP™ machinery during a two-day test at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” with the Ducati Desmosedici GP machine. Sharing the bike with Ducati’s test rider, Michele Pirro, Bautista was on track during the first half of Day 1 for his first MotoGP™ action since 2018 as he tested the machine that currently leads the Manufacturers’, Teams’ and Riders’ Championships in the MotoGP™ paddock. Bautista’s first time on track lasted from 09:00 Local Time until 13:00 as he got four hours on the Desmosedici GP during the first part of the day to get re-accustomed to the MotoGP™ machine after four seasons away from the Grand Prix paddock. During this time, the reigning WorldSBK Champion completed numerous stints. Bautista completed around 60 laps across Day 1 as sunny weather greeted the reigning World Superbike Champion. Bautista revealed his goals for the test ahead of action beginning as he declared that his feeling on the bike and having fun would be the most important thing while on the Desmosedici GP machine, but the distance he completed equated to more than two full-race distances in MotoGP™ during his first half-day on the MotoGP™ machine. His first three stints were nine laps, not including his in and out laps, as he searched for a good feeling on the bike. His fourth stint was a bit shorter than the first three, lasting only 13 minutes, but he was back out on track 15 minutes after returning to the box. The next stint was a 12-lap run for Bautista which concluded just before 13:00 Local Time (GMT+2). Reflecting on Day 1, Bautista said: “I don’t have in my mind anything because, in the end, in my whole career, this is my first time having a real test with a factory MotoGP™ bike and team. This is something amazing. I’ve never had this chance in my life. I raced at Phillip Island five years ago, but it was like ‘you race this weekend’, so I didn’t prepare for that. I’m so happy to ride this bike again. The feeling from the first lap was really good. I understood the bike very well. I’m having a lot of fun. “The adaptation is going really well, maybe better than I expected. My last time was in 2018 and now the bikes are very, very different. I didn’t really have a fresh memory from that time but, even if I had, the bike now is completely different especially on the aerodynamic side. After many years in WorldSBK, it felt even more different because the bike is stiffer, the tyres are stiffer, and everything is different. I expected a worse adaptation but, from the first few laps, I started to feel good on the bike and understood how to ride this bike.” Speaking after Bautista’s morning concluded, Ducati Corse Technical Director Marco Zambenedetti said: “His feelings are different, of course, especially the engine is different and the tyres. I’ve seen a very fast adaptation to the different tyres and the bike. His lap times have been positive after just a couple of runs. He’s really fast. Honestly, I’m curious to see where he wants to go in these two days!”

Bautista: "I improved my feeling a lot… we made some adjustments with the ergonomics" Wednesday, 21 June 2023 Reigning WorldSBK Champion, Alvaro Bautista, completed his second day of action at Misano on the Desmosedici GP Alvaro Bautista’s (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) two-day test at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” concluded on Wednesday as he racked up the laps on the Desmosedici GP. Taking advantage of the break between rounds in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, the reigning Champion took to the Italian circuit for the second of two days of action. The first day allowed Bautista to get used to the machine before making some modifications on Day 2. On Tuesday, Bautista completed around two MotoGP™ race distances during his time on track for his first time on the Ducati Desmosedici GP since 2018. The test has been considered a prize for claiming the 2022 WorldSBK title after a season-long battle with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK), with the Ducati rider claiming the title with a round to spare in Indonesia. He’s also started his title defence in style, with 14 wins in the first 15 races. Like on Day 1, the Spaniard completed several stints throughout the day as he increased his mileage on the MotoGP™ machine. He started his first stint at around 09:10 Local Time (GMT+2) for nine laps, before taking to the track around 40 minutes later for another eight laps. A third run got underway at around 10:30 for eighth laps, before another started 50 minutes later. Just after midday, the 38-year-old returned to the track for a 14-minute run. Six runs were completed in total as he added another almost 50 laps to his total, while he tried the soft, medium and hard compounds that are used in MotoGP™. Bautista’s best lap time was a 1’32.590s which came in his fourth stint when using soft tyres, with the time coming on his seventh lap of that run. Although a like-for-like comparison can’t be made due to differing track conditions and the test happening at a different time of the year compared to the San Marino Grand Prix last year, Bautista’s time would have put him in the top ten in Free Practice 4. The fastest time in that session was set by Ducati’s Enea Bastianini who posted a 1’32.295s. Track temperatures reached about 50 degrees Celsius on Day 2 as Bautista tried different combinations of tyre compounds as part of his programme, including new and used tyres. The Spaniard also completed a couple of practice starts around the halfway stage of the day to get as much as experience as possible on the Desmosedici GP, while he also had a narrower fuel tank on Day 2 when compared to Day 1. Reflecting on Day 2, Bautista said: “I’m so happy because from yesterday to today, I improved my feeling on the bike a lot. We started with a good feeling on the bike but on the second day, I felt much more comfortable and much more like I’m used to riding this bike. I enjoyed it a lot and it was so nice to work with all the guys here. Step by step, we made small changes on the bike to make it more for me and my riding style, and to be more comfortable. I’m really happy with this test.” “The programme was that on the first day, we’d just get a first impression on the bike and the second day, we made some modifications especially with the ergonomics. I asked to have a higher and narrower seat, but it was not possible. I asked for a narrower fuel tank. They had it in the factory, so they brought it for the second day and it definitely helped me be more comfortable on the bike. We started to touch the setup of the bike a little bit, to adapt it to my style, and to go together in the same direction. All the small changes we made felt better and better and gave me more confidence on the bike. Today, we tried different tyres. We compared the soft and hard on the front. The feeling was quite good, better than I expected. On the rear, we saw the difference between the soft and medium tyre.” After the two-day test, the World Championship leader’s focus once again shifts to WorldSBK. Round 6 is fast approaching with Donington Park the next venue as Bautista looks to write his name into the history books. It’s a venue he has yet to win at, but he did take second place there last year. Will Bautista be able to continue his winning form as WorldSBK hits the halfway stage of the season, or will his rivals be able to close the gap in the UK?

OUTSPOKEN AHEAD OF DONINGTON PARK: it’s a question of time Thursday, 29 June 2023 WorldSBK’s media day in the United Kingdom meant there’s no such thing of enjoying silence, and we just can’t get enough of straight-talking wagging tongues ahead of action igniting The 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s media day on Thursday at the Donington Park circuit in England, UK, was a hive of activity. Situated in the rolling hills of the English countryside and a stone’s throw from the historic city of Nottingham, it’s back to WorldSBK’s roots, as it was the first track we ever visited in 1988. However, 35 years later, strong declarations continue off-track as well as on it. From this part of England, Robin Hood – as legend has it – was the highly skilled archer and swordsman, but who will hit the target of their battles this weekend? Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team): “Time is running out on what I will do” “Last year, Donington Park was good for me and in the past, it’s been a great place to come. I always enjoy coming here in front of the home fans. I’d like to think we can be better here, but the new track surface has a play in it. We need to put our feet back on the ground and understand where we are, where we’re going and what we’re doing. If the circuit has the history it had, it should favour us, which would be nice. But this year, the level has stepped up a little bit and we’ve struggled to make that next little step. Here’s a bit of a reset for us, we can start with a fresh feeling. “With 2024, there’s no news for what’s going on, I just want to focus on what I’m doing this weekend. We’ll see after here a bit more what’s going on, but time is running out on what I will do. You have to keep waiting for the moment. My priority is to continue in World Superbike but I’m looking in every area and at every option, like a lot of riders do, whether that’s here or somewhere else. I would like to continue with BMW, that is more of a priority that I have. I feel like we can make it happen but it’s a hard time for me to be thinking about what the potential is. I need to believe in the project like they’ve believed in me, and I just think that this weekend, having a reset and regroup and to understand a bit more, will help me make some decisions for the future.” Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK): “I’m full of optimism… we were able to understand new items” “I’m full of optimism; we’ve had good results at Donington Park in the past and coming here after a test last week at Aragon, where we were able to understand some new items and keep working on our pace in the hotter conditions. I’m looking forward to the weekend, they’ve resurfaced the circuit which could throw some curveballs. It sounds like the grip level is very high but the surface is also very abrasive, but we’ll work like normal on Friday. We’ve always been able to get away with the softer tyre here at Donington Park with the SCQ and SCX but we need to understand tyre choice too. It’ll be a busy day tomorrow. The test was split in two parts; we tried some new electronics items that we can use straight away and other items that we might not see but can be used by KMC to develop in the future. Alex has been an amazing teammate, we’ve battled on track very hard – recently at Mandalika – and he always gives 110%. He’s a great team player and the atmosphere is good. For me, it was normal that he continues and it’s nice now it is official.” Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati): “From my first time here 20 years ago, I loved it” “We arrive at Donington Park and maybe it’s been a difficult race for us in the past. Every year is different, and anything can happen. I’m looking forward to this weekend. The track has been resurfaced; the layout is amazing; it’s one of the best tracks in the world. From my first time here 20 years ago, I loved it. It’s a track that with Ducati, I’ve never enjoyed as others, I look forward to trying to have a good feeling that we had in the first rounds of the season. The test was two days with a lot of fun on the bike. I had really good feedback and I could adapt very quickly to a MotoGP™ style with the engine, the power, the brakes, the tyres and the frames; they’re very different to WorldSBK. The feeling with bike was really good. At the moment, there is no plan for the future. I’ve requested that Ducati change some items on the bike specifically for my ergonomics because I felt the bike was a bit big for me. I don’t know if Ducati made this change, but maybe we can re-test and try again to see If I can feel even better.” Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK): “I’m really happy to continue with Kawasaki… there’s a lot of good things coming” “I’m really happy to continue with Kawasaki into 2024. This season has not been as good as we wanted. Kawasaki have set themselves some pretty high standards in WorldSBK. We’ve had some big competition from the other teams in the last couple of years. We’re in the process now of trying to get back there. I was really happy with the offer from Kawasaki for one more year and it’s an easy decision to make. Although we’re not winning races, and I’ve made some mistakes this year, I’m close to Jonny and I feel like I’m riding very well and enjoying it. I’m working well with the team. It’s never 100% what it seems from the outside. There’s a lot of good things coming; we know it’s not going to be easy to turn this season around too much but it’s my home round this weekend and a perfect place to announce next year and try to challenge for the podium.” Iker Lecuona (Team HRC): “My manager has spoken with a few teams” “Honestly, I know my manager has spoken with a few teams or people. I don’t know anything. My manager’s coming here again to keep talking. For now, nothing is closed and I cannot say anything. I’d like to say it’ll be a bit better than last year, but the reality is we are in the same position. They resurfaced the track. I heard something that the new asphalt wears the tyres more and we have a lot of problems with this, so we need to check how we feel on the bike and how it affects tyre life.” Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team): “We’ve been making big progress… I’m hoping we can make a real big step” “I am super excited and looking forward to coming to Donington Park. We’ve been working in a good way with the Motoxracing team. We’ve been making some big progress so, I’m hoping, this weekend, we can make a real big step forward. I enjoy Donington and I’ve had some success here in BSB. I’ve got a lot to learn and to prove to Motoxracing and Yamaha. I want to go about my business this weekend, do the best job I can at my home round, for the fans and my family and friends that are coming. Hopefully, we can use this weekend as a steppingstone and use it to carry me on for the rest of the season.” Tom Sykes (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team): “In a dream scenario, the idea would be to add to the podiums" “I’m always excited to go racing. Coming here to Donington, it helps a little bit because I’ve had some success here in the past. It’s a home round, we’ve had some fantastic weather and hopefully if that continues, we’ll be in for a great weekend. The circuit’s been resurfaced so it’ll be interesting to see the lap times. My target is to add to the success. That would be plan A. In a dream scenario, the idea would be to add to the podiums. That’s the target and we’ll work towards it. The lap times are certainly much faster. We’ve all been having a little prediction for the WorldSBK riders and if we’re getting around in the prediction times, it’s going to be fast!

Rea leads rain-hit FP1 at Donington Park, home star Brad Ray sparkles for Top 5 Friday, 30 June 2023 The six-time World Champion was on fine form but Bradley Ray’s fifth place after the opening session was one of the headlining names The 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship has kicked off at Donington Park and the Great British weather had its say from the start. A dry start to the session before rain flags were being waved, and although the rain did come down harder with 20 minutes to go, the track dried and fast laps came in, with Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) on top. Rea had a small technical issue at the start of the session and headed out before the bigger of the rain showers, before hitting the top with just over five minutes to go. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) was strong in second, after leading a large chunk of the session, whilst it was a mighty opening 45 minutes for Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven), who took third and was top Ducati. Fourth place honours went the way of Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), but it was Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) who stole the show with a strong fifth place, as he swept through the English countryside and even topped the sector times in the first intermediate. Making it four British riders inside the top six, Tom Sykes (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was top BMW at his beloved Donington Park, whilst Championship leader Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was only seventh, ahead of teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) took ninth as he hopes to bounce back from a tricky home round at Misano, whilst Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) made it five manufacturers inside the top ten with tenth. Top six after WorldSBK FP1 at Donington Park, full results here: 1. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) 1’27.627s 2. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) +0.052s 3. Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) +0.130s 4. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) +0.230s 5. Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) +0.430s 6. Manzi pips Montella in red-flagged FP1, Britain’s Booth-Amos shines in fifth Friday, 30 June 2023 Only 0.015s separated Stefano Manzi and Yari Montella in FP1 in a disrupted first session of WorldSSP action in the UK Championship contender Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) struck first at Donington Park as the FIM Supersport World Championship burst back into action. In a red-flagged 45-minute Free Practice 1 session, Manzi and rival Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) traded fastest laps at the end of FP1, with only 0.015s separating the two Italians. It was also a strong start to the Prosecco DOC UK Round for Britain’s Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo ME AIR Racing) as he shone on home soil. The two-time WorldSSP race winner had been the long-time leader during FP1 and had a dramatic session with a couple of huge moments, with one coming at Turns 6-7 when he pulled off a miraculous save and later at Turn 12 when he ran into the gravel. Montella went fastest after setting a 1’30.192s before the Yamaha rider usurped him with a 1’30.177s. Championship leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) claimed third place as he lapped more than two tenths slower than the two Italians ahead of him. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) narrowly missed out on a place in the top three with his time just 0.019s slower than Bulega. Home hero Booth-Amos had a solid FP1 at the venue he won at in the British Superbike championship as he took fifth. His best lap was a 1’30.529s to put him around a tenth away from the top three while Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) rounded out the top six as he went around half-a-second slower than Manzi’s best time. 2021 WorldSSP300 Champion Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) was another who enjoyed a strong FP1 as he finished in seventh. He was 0.568s slower than the fastest time but secured a place in the top seven by fending off Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) with the Italian in eighth. Finland’s Niki Tuuli (Dynavolt Triumph) was ninth and French rider Valentin Debise (GMT94 Yamaha) completed the top ten. The session was red flagged with around nine minutes left when Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) crashed at the Foggy Esses after losing the front of his F3 800 RR machine. When the red flags came out, the Barcelona Race 2 winner was tenth in the classification but dropped down to 13th place as other riders improved their times. The Turkish star was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Sofuoglu was declared unfit for the remainder of Friday’s action due to a suspected concussion, and he will be reassessed again before Saturday’s Tissot Superpole session. The top six from WorldSSP FP1, full results here: 1. Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) 1’30.177 2. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) +0.015s 3. Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) +0.253s 4. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) +0.272s 5. Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo ME AIR Racing) +0.352s 6. Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) +0.534
