Lowes dominates proceedings in Q2 stunner The MarcVDS man fronted the British assault on qualifying as Dixon joined his compatriot on the front row with Acosta sandwiched in between It's not often we see a dominant performance in the tightly contested Moto2™ category, but this time it was Sam Lowes (Elf MarcVDS Racing Team) who blew away the field with an incredible 1:40.750 taking pole position by 0.578s. 2nd and 3rd places were decided in typical Moto2™ fashion with just 0.002s between Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) in 2nd place and Jake Dixon (GASGAS Aspar Team) who will line up on the final spot on the front row. As always it was a hard-fought battle in Q1 as the Moto2™ riders toughed it for a chance at Q2 promotion. It was Ai Ogura who took the top spot dominating the session to take the first Q2 place. Fast laps came flying in at the end of the session and it was Joe Roberts (Italtrans Racing Team), Zonta Van Den Goorbergh (Fieten Olie Racing GP), and Manuel Gonzalez (Correos Prepago Yamaha VR46 MasterCamp) who joined the Japanese rider and in securing Q2 promotion. The green flag dropped and Q2 got underway and it was Jake Dixon (GASGAS Aspar Team) who set the benchmark leading the way from Alonso Lopez (Beta Tools SpeedUp) and Sam Lowes (Elf Marc VDS Racing). It wasn't long before Ogura put himself in the mix, slotting into 3rd place and demoting Lowes down one just before it was time for a change of rubber. Four minutes to go and red sectors were coming from the home man Pedro Acosta who took over the top spot. The Spaniard's time at the top didn't last long however, as straight after Sam Lowes made magic happen pulling out a scintillating lap time to move the goalposts by over half a second. Despite efforts from the competition, Lowes' lap stood and he will start the Spanish Grand Prix from pole. Alonso Lopez bagged the first spot on the 2nd row in 4th, as he'll line up ahead of Ai Ogura who fought through Q1 to take the 5th spot on the grid. It was a good day as well for Barry Baltus (Fieten Olie Racing GP) who bagged the final spot on the 2nd row in 6th. The Moto2™ riders' attention now turns to the race on Sunday, make sure not to miss any of the action as it commences at 13:15 local time (GMT +1). Top 10 : 1. Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) – 1:40.750 2. Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) + 0.578 3. Jake Dixon (GASGAS Aspar Team) + 0.580 4. Alonso López (Speed Up Racing) +0.709 5. Pure gold: Binder vs Miller vs Bagnaia lights up Jerez! KTM pull a showstopper out of the hat as Bagnaia picks a late race pocket to complete his Saturday turnaround It was blink-and-you-miss-it action right from the moment the lights went out in the Tissot Sprint at the Gran Premio MotoGP™ Guru by Gryfyn de España. After an early red flag on the initial start, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) flew off the line on the restart as he went on to outsmart his KTM teammate and take a hard-fought Sprint victory. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) put in a timely performance to put himself back into championship contention as he snatched 2nd place from Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) on the final lap. Light out... and then lights out again Tensions were high on the grid ahead of the first Tissot Sprint on Spanish soil, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) had a slow launch from the initial start as the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo flew off into 1st and 2nd. The red flags came out soon after however as a pile-up at turn 2 meant the Sprint was to be restarted. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi was caught out by the 3 rider collision happening ahead of him, leaving the Italian nowhere to go as he joined Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™), Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), and Augusto Fernandez (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3) in the Circuito de Jerez gravel trap. All four riders quickly returned to the garage to mount their machines and join the Sprint for a full restart to proceedings. The riders lined up on the grid once again for a second go at getting their Tissot Sprint off to the perfect start. The KTM's did the same again as Binder flew into the lead with Miller slotting himself into a tiny gap on Espargaro at turn 1. This unsettled the Spaniard as he dropped down to 5th which promoted the two Ducatis of Martin and Bagnaia to 3rd and 4th. The riders came barreling into Angel Nieto corner and Martin meant business as he threw his Prima Pramac Racing Duacti up the inside of Miller to snatch 2nd place away for the Aussie. In the meantine, Bagnaia and Espargaro were right in the mix watching the Sprint unfold ahead of them. One lap later and it was a divebomb at Dani Pedrosa corner from Jack Miller, as he took 2nd place back from Martin. Martin tried to fight back but the Ausse wasn't having any of it which left Bagnaia with perfect opportunity to take advantage as he slotted himself into 3rd ahead of Martin and just behind Miller. Eight laps to go and it was Miller took to the front as he decided it was his turn to lead the race and demoted his teammate to 2nd. Alex Marquez hit the gravel trap once again after crashing out of the initial start, it wasn't meant to be for the Spaniard who failed to score in his first Tissot Sprint of home soil. Just one lap later and disaster struck for another Spaniard as Aleix Espargaro crashed out of a point-scoring position for the 3rd time in 2023. The KTM's then began to pull away from the two Ducati's with 4 laps to go, stretching the gap out to half a second. Martin was riding all over the rear wheel of the Bagnaia's factory Ducati, as the Champion struggled to hold onto the leading duo. Martin was desperate to find a way past the Italian as the Ducati top dog was proving to be a tricky hurdle in the Spaniard's quest for victory. Miller and Binder were riding the edge of a knife as the laps continued to tick away, and with a lap and a half remaining Binder muscled his way past his teammate into the lead of the Sprint. The scrapping out front had let the Ducati's gain ground to the leading duo. Bagnaia lined up a move on Miller into the Pedrosa corner, Miller resisted on the brakes but overshot the corner running wide and allowing the Italian through. Meanwhile, Binder had put the hammer down at the front and stretched his lead over the riders scrapping it out behind. Binder went on to take an impressive Sprint victory continuing an enjoyable weekend for the Austrian manufacturer with Miller making it two KTM's on the podium. Bagnaia fended off Miller to the finish line and took an important 2nd place to put himself back into Championship contention and regain his confidence. Action everywhere you look As ever there were battles throughout the field in MotoGP™. Jorge Martin was attached to the battle for 2nd place but missed out on the top 3 by jusy 0.173s to take 4th place in the Tissot Sprint. An intense battle between Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team) and Dani Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Racing Team) also had viewers glued to their screens as the Porguese rider fended off the MotoGP™ Legend for 5th place. 1.5 seconds further back Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) had his hands full trying to defend his 7th place from Johan Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing Ducati), the Spaniard came out on top in that scrap leaving the Frenchman to settle for P8. The Mooney VR46 Racing riders were involved in an intense fight for the final point-scoring position in the Tissot Sprint, in the end it was Marco Bezzecchi who despite losing the Championship lead won the battle against Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) to bag 9th place. After an incredible day of racing at the Gran Premio MotoGP™ Guru by Gryfyn de España, MotoGP™ fans now have the opportunity to digest all of Saturday's action before it all kicks off again on Sunday. If Saturday is anything to go by, you do not want to miss any on Sunday's billing as the race gets underway at 15:00 local time (GMT +1). Top 10 1. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) 2. Mat Oxley: Morbidelli has been sanctioned for his Turn 2 move that caused the pile-up. To me, his action was just a bump, sneaking through on the inside of Alex M, not an actual collision, in despite of what followed, so I really don't think it's worthy of a sanction. But what do I know?

Ben Spies In recent years everyone wanted MotoGp to be closer racing. Now if you even touch someone your getting sanctioned. If it’s blatant make the call, if it’s RACING then let the boys get on with it!

The comeback: Bagnaia topples KTM with the pressure piled on The plot thickens as the Italian retakes the Championship lead despite Binder refusing to go down easy with Bezzecchi crashing out Pick a name out of a hat and stick with it as there's no predicting the action in the 2023 MotoGP™ season. The Gran Premio MotoGP™ Guru by Gryfyn de España did not fail to entertain as the Grand Prix remained completely open right until the final corner. A heroic comeback from the World Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) saw the number 1 fend off the Tissot Sprint winner Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who piled on the pressure in a nail-biting final two laps to fall just short of the victory. Despite Bagnaia snapping up a 22-point lead in the Championship, KTM's dream weekend continued as Binder consolidated solid points to put himself 3rd in the Championship just 25 points away from Bagnaia, with the previous Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) dropping to 2nd after crashing out. To put the icing on the cake for the Austrian manufacturer, Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) rounded out the Spanish Grand Prix podium having battled hard throughout the race to make it two KTM's in the top 3 for both the Tissot Sprint and the Grand Prix. Three into one doesn't go… The pressure was on as you could cut the tension with a knife on the grid after the fierce and feisty Tissot Sprint was the perfect precursor to MotoGP™'s first Grand Prix on its return to Europe. The eyes were on the KTM's as the lights went out and both the factory bikes took to the front with Miller leading Binder and Martin through turn 1. In the meantime, Fabio Quarararo's (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) nightmare start to the season continued as the Frenchman crashed out of the race at turn 2. The 2020 World Champion hobbled away after competing for the same inch of tarmac with Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team) and Marco Bezzecchi, which saw the Portuguese rider join the Yamaha man in the gravel. The incident brought out the red flags as the air fence had gone down at turn 2. Whilst the necessary safety precautions were put in place the grid were preparing to reset and go again for the restart. Luckily for Quartararo, a medical check deemed the Frenchman fit and the #20 returned to pitlane to recompose himself for a second bite at the cherry, but this time with a long lap penalty to serve for irresponsible riding at turn 2. Take two Surprise surprise, it was the flying KTM's once again that took to the front with Binder rolling around the outside of Miller to take the lead with Martin slotting into 3rd before an incredible round-the-outside move at Pedrosa corner came from the World Champion Bagnaia which stunned fans as he made the impossible possible. Binder, Miller, Bagnaia, Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing), and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) was the order the first time across the line. It wasn't long before the KTMs switched places as Miller took the lead in hopes of making himself the first rider in MotoGP™ history to take three victories with three different manufacturers. With 21 laps to go the KTM's began to pull away from the Ducati's of Bagnaia and Martin stretching the gap out to just over half a second. Binder then took the lead back from teammate whilst Bagnaia had put the afterburners on to set the fastest lap of the race so far and bridge the gap to the leading duo. Moto3™ or MotoGP™? Bagnaia wasted no time in getting past the Aussie in 2nd, putting his factory Ducati in the tiniest of gaps at Pedrosa corner to sit up the KTM man and set his sights on the other KTM in the lead. One lap later and Miller had fallen victim to Martin as the Spaniard moved up into P3 demoting Miller to P4. Miller wasn't having any of it though and at the final corner through his bike up the inside of Martin and parked his KTM at the apex to push the Spaniard wide allowing Espargaro through reshuffling the order to see Miller in 3rd, Espargaro 4th, and Martin drop to 5th in one fell swoop. One lap later and Bagnaia was forced to drop one position after making contact on his way past Miller which shuffled the order once again, as the Italian let Miller back past making it a KTM one-two once again with Bagnaia now 3rd and Espargaro looking menacing in 4th. Martin got back past Espargaro with 13 laps to go as his thirst to taste the champagne on home soil was yet to be quenched. The Spaniard had his sights set on Bagnaia who was half a second up the road and sat in the final podium position. Meanwhile, Miller was coming under further pressure from Jorge Martin as his teammate Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) had crashed out of the Grand Prix just after getting the better of Espargaro on his charge up to 5th place. Game on in the championship fight Soon after there was a significant twist in the Championship story as Championship Leader Marco Bezzeccchi crashed out of the Grand Prix gifting the top spot to close friend Pecco Bagnaia. The crash had meant that the battle for victory out the front was between the two men at the top of the MotoGP™ World Standings. With Bagnaia in 2nd and Binder six-tenths up the road, the provisional points put Bagnaia in the lead 15 points adrift of the race leader. Bagnaia wasn't settling for best of the rest however as the Italian could smell blood, and like a shark hunting its prey clawed down the gap to Binder. Four laps to go and Bagnaia was glued to the rear of Binder's KTM before the World Champion through himself up the inside of the South African at the final corner to cross the line in the lead with three laps remaining. As the penultimate lap came to a close fans had an enthralling battle for the victory on their hands as it was between the two men 1st and 3rd in the standings for the Spanish Grand Prix. The final sector quickly came around and the stage was set for a final corner lunge but Bagnaia was too strong on the brakes, and the World Champion silenced the critics with all the pressure on his shoulders, giving the Ducati garage plenty to shout about. Champions spirit from the Flying Frenchman Following the incident during the initial race start at turn 2, Fabio Quartararo had been slapped with a long lap penalty for what was deemed to be irresponsible riding. The restart was underway and after the Yamaha man had settled into the race Quartararo decided it was time to take his long lap penalty. The time came for the Frenchman but after failing to complete the full penalty Quartararo had to repeat the long lap which pushed the #20 right down the order. Nothing was going to stop the indomitable spirit of the former World Champion, however. One by one Quartararo picked off the riders ahead to bring home a heroic 10th place. Despite Yamaha rider's efforts, it’s not looking good for Quartararo in the title fight as he sits in 11th in the standings 47 points adrift from race victor Bagnaia. With the championship plot ever-changing in MotoGP™, there's no telling what the chapter holds as the paddock moves to the SHARK Grand Prix de France on the 12th - 14th of May. Oliveira suffers dislocated shoulder in Spanish GP The Portuguese rider has since been declared unfit and must pass a medical if he wants to participate in Le Mans
Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team) was involved in a three-bike collision at turn 2 of the first lap of the Gran Premio MotoGP™ Guru by Gryfyn de España. The Portuguese rider was caught in a crash with Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) as the two bikes came together with Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team).
The incident put the race under a red flag scenario as Oliveira was taken via ambulance to the on-sight medical centre where he was treated for a dislocated shoulder. Oliveira has been declared unfit for the SHARK Grand Prix de France on the 12th - 14th of May but will have the opportunity to undergo another medical check at the French Grand Prix to determine whether or not he will be fit to ride.

Peter Bom: A sprint added to the race weekend, plus the way the KTM's fired of the line means many teams now focusing on the cluch. Never seen so many practice starts like here today at the Jerez test. Mechanics are changing plates all the time.

Jeremy McWilliams: MotoGP is very quickly turning into the biggest farce ever! Penalties for racing, don’t brush another rider, don’t run wide on the exit of the long lap (it’s slower) and you will receive another long lap. For crying out loud catch yourselves on race direction. This is abysmal. Simon Patterson: ARE. YOU. FUCKING. JOKING?

Jerez Test: Novelties aplenty & Bezzecchi back on top! Our reporters spotted some interesting developments in pitlane as the premier class got back on track in Jerez Did you miss us? We know, we know, it’s barely been a day. But when the action is as good as it was at the Spanish GP, withdrawal symptoms are natural. Luckily, we have a few tidbits to share from the official one-day test that saw the MotoGP™ riders head back out on Monday, with plenty of novelties up and down pitlane… and a familiar name back on top: Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team). Mooney VR46, Gresini, Ducati Lenovo & Prima Pramac As can be expected, there wasn’t anything new for the 2022 Ducatis but that didn’t stop Mooney VR46 Racing Team from making it a 1-2. Luca Marini was just a tenth off Bezzecchi, who in turn was about four tenths off the all-time lap record from last season. The sole novelty at Ducati, the home of novelty – a moniker now seemingly under threat from KTM – was a new belly pan on Johann Zarco's Prima Pramac racing bike, with a small inlet on the bottom. Monster Energy Yamaha At Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™, there were two different chassis for Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli. Pitlane reporter Simon Crafar was confident he’s seen the “different” one before, as it gets tested, tested again and then shelved. Quartararo also rode the weekend with the newer swingarm – and has that at the test on both machines – having previously gone back to a previous version. Some interesting wings also sprouted on Morbidelli’s machine, and the sidepods were bigger. Meanwhile, Quartararo tested the new exhaust in the afternoon, taking it out on a couple of runs. El Diablo was third overall and top until the latter stages, with Morbidelli down in P16. Aprilia & CryptoData RNF At Aprilia Racing, it looked like the focus was more on fine-tuning what they have and working with setup. It also looked like both sides of the garage were more than a little preoccupied with practice starts. Maverick Viñales especially was taking every chance to try a launch, and teammate Aleix Espargaro put in a fair few after he also lost out at Turn 1 four times in a row this weekend. Viñales was fifth, and Espargaro seventh. At CryptoData RNF MotoGP™ Team, Lorenzo Savadori stepped in for the sidelined Miguel Oliveira, and was unfortunately one of the few crashers on the day. Still, he put in nearly half a century of laps for some more information. Raul Fernandez, meanwhile, did over 70, and ended the day in P11. Red Bull KTM & GASGAS Tech3 Headlines during the race weekend weren’t enough for the Austrian factory, so they thought they’d make a few more on Monday. Some of the new aero first seen in the hands of Dani Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) over the weekend was put through its paces by Brad Binder and Jack Miller, and our reporters spotted a sidepod that’s more an extra, vertical panel all the way to the bottom of the fairing. Our eagle eyes also saw a new chassis for Pedrosa. Oh, and someone from Red Bull Advanced Technologies was spotted in the box… Binder ended the day in eighth, Miller in P14 and Pedrosa near the back of the order, slacking off on the time attack heroics he very much proved he was still capable of during the weekend. GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3’s Augusto Fernandez took the opportunity to put in 69 laps as he continues to adapt to MotoGP™, and he had the new aero, without the side addition, that was raced by Pedrosa. His temporary teammate – test rider Jonas Folger – did 63. Repsol Honda & LCR Honda Castrol/Idemitsu Our eyebrows were raised at Honda, as pitlane reporters Simon Crafar and Jack Gorst spotted the long-awaited Kalex chassis in the hands of HRC test rider Stefan Bradl. Repsol Honda Team Manager Alberto Puig said initial signs were good. Bad luck hit when Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) was attempting to head out on it though, with a technical problem seeing the 2020 World Champion manage only five corners of his out lap. Mir also crashed earlier in the session before that, rider ok, but completed 67 laps for P15. The number 36 had two of his normal chassis this morning but then had one of the chassis teammate Marc Marquez had been using. Mir also tried the small aero update that Bradl had throughout the race weekend, as well as new downwash ducts. Alex Rins (LCR Honda Castrol) was seen with a chassis used previously by Mir, as well as the downwash ducts. Honda also had a new “winglet” on the swingarm. Rins did 82 laps and was P17, suffering a crash at the end but rider ok. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Castrol) was top Honda in P12 after 70 laps. Now it’s time to pack up the paddock for the premier class in Jerez, although we’ll see the Moto2™ and Moto3™ fields back out on Tuesday. For MotoGP™ it’s next stop: #GP1000 at Le Mans, with more history waiting to be made just around the corner! The top ten: 1. Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) – 1:36.574 2. Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) - +0.104 3. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) - +0.151 4. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) - +0.389 5. Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) - +0.390 6. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) - +0.450 7. Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia Racing) - +0.486 8. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) - +0.494 9.
