Easy to see which Ducati riders are using the front shapeshifter - Zarco's bike is the only one with the extended aero fork cover to hide the shapeshifter mechanism

Martin pips Miller to pole as Ducati dominate in Texas The Spaniard comes from Q1 to claim a second pole position of 2022; Ducati lockout top five, Quartararo crashes, Marc Marquez struggles Jorge Martin’s (Pramac Racing) stunning Saturday afternoon form continued at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas as the Spaniard comes from Q1 to claim a sensational second pole position of the season. It’s four front row starts in a row for Martin who beat Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) by just 0.003s with a 2:02.039, as Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) claimed P3 to make it a Ducati triple threat on the front row. And just behind, two more Ducatis line up P4 and P5. A star-studded Q1 Q1 was – as we’re used to seeing nowadays with the competitiveness of the class – was a star-studded affair. World Championship leader Alex Espargaro and Aprilia Racing teammate fancied their chances of progressing, but so did Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Martin and Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™). Darryn Binder (WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP™ Team), chasing big brother Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), crashed at Turn 3 unhurt in the early stages. Rins was the early pacesetter, a 2:02.723 was the benchmark, but Martin took over at the summit with eight minutes to go. That saw Aleix Espargaro kicked out of the all-important top two, and chasing a time on his second run, Espargaro was down. Hopes of a Q2 place were gone for the Spaniard and the best he could hope for was a P13 grid slot. Luckily for the number 41, P3 in the session and P13 on the grid was where he stayed, as Martin and Rins progressed. Ducati domination Q2 at the Circuit of The Americas then got underway and it was Miller who was the early pacesetter, as fellow Ducati rider Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) crashed at Turn 15. The Italian was able to pick his GP21 straight back up though, and immediately set off chasing a pole position lap time – no damage done. Then, another crash. This time it was Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) at the penultimate corner. Rider ok, 100m Olympic sprinter mode was activated, but this was now a race against time for the Frenchman who was provisional P7. So at the end of the first set of runs, Miller was leading Bagnaia by 0.008s, with Martin and Bastianini making it a Ducati 1-2-3-4. Quartararo managed to make his way back to the garage with just over four minutes to go and straight away, the number 20 was back on track on his second YZR-M1. Pecco came out of the traps on his second fresh rear soft Michelin tyre flying. 0.140s was his advantage through the third split and by the line, Pecco went top by 0.160s over teammate Miller. The latter, though, was also setting red sector times. Through the third split, Miller was 0.236s up on Pecco’s effort and sure enough, the Australian returned to P1. But there was another Ducati rider lighting up the timing screens – Martin. The qualifying specialist lost time in the third split but a wonderful fourth split saw Martin pip Miller by the slimmest of margins: 0.003s. Was there anyone else challenging? Not by the looks of it. Quartararo was struggling to respond, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) had a quiet session and was shoved to P9 as Rins and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) jumped up to P7 and P8. In the end, Martin’s 0.003s advantage was enough to beat Miller as Pecco joins his GP22 duo on the front row. Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) and Bastianini, in P4 and P5, made it a Ducati demolition on Saturday in Texas. How the Q2 runners line up Behind the five Ducatis is Quartararo lining up in P6, how much did that crash affect the reigning World Champion’s pole position hunt? Rins and Mir head up the third row ahead of Marc Marquez, the eight-time World Champion had a quiet session in Austin, as fellow HRC rider Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) rounded out the top 10. Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) and an under the weather Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team) will launch from P11 and P12 respectively. What a frantic and ferocious pair of qualifying sessions in Austin, as we now turn our attention to race day. Can anyone stop Ducati from claiming victory in Texas? And what can the World Championship leader muster up from P13? Time will tell. Tune in at 13:00 local time (GMT-5) to find out.

Neil Morrison: Quartararo: "The favourites are Marc and Bastianini. We were looking at sector 3 from Bastianini with old tyres. Basically, (his time) was (the same as) my time attack in that sector."
Aleix Espargaró, critic: “Álex Márquez has zero respect, he was waiting for me in FP4″

Speed, potential to be top three’ - Viñales Picture: GeeBee Images Maverick Viñales claimed top ten in the AmericasGP on Sunday but while a strong result, the potential of his partnership with Aprilia hints at much more. Having sat second in the times after Friday’s opening practice, Viñales maintained impressive pace across the Austin weekend before topping warm up on Sunday morning, with eventually winner Enea Bastianini just a tenth behind. A difficult Saturday, however, left the Spaniard unable to match the front running pace over one lap and facing the Q1 fight. Lining up 14th on the Texas grid, between teammate Aleix Espargaro and WithU Yamaha’s Andrea Dovizioso, he found his rhythm once again. Battling the Argentina winner and KTM’s Brad Binder in the closing stages before closing the line in tenth, twelve seconds back from the Gresini. “Actually I think is the weekend when I feel better with the bike,” Viñales confirmed after the race. “It was tough. It was tough Saturday, because today we had the rhythm, we had the speed, we have the potential to be in the top three. So we need to keep working, keep building, keep learning. “I think we are into the right way. We are into the right mood and we have motivation. Every race I finish I felt better. I felt more competitive and I felt more one with the bike. Still for sure is a long way to go, a long way to improve but I can see myself in the front and this is very important. This is confidence so we are building a lot of confidence. “If I have to say something is that this weekend we make a mistake on Saturday. Because, well, not a mistake. We were unable to push more. If not, I think was amazing race. Anyway, it is how it is. Now we face on the way that we were very fast when we were alone, without traffic. So we keep building, we keep working “Still the feeling has to come for one lap,” he continued on his progress with the RS-GP. “Still I need to know more the bike but then every race I feel stronger, I feel more with the bike and today we had the pace to be top three. So actually I’m happy. I’m not worried about the potential because I know this, but we need to somehow found out for one lap. But I’m happy, my feelings are coming back and this is the most important.” While Argentina saw Aprilia on the top step of the podium, America one week later was a different story. Viñales headed his captain over the line with half a second to spare for a handful of points on the fringes of the top ten. “Aleix didn’t have a great race. He was struggling a lot.,” Viñales admitted. “If not, I think in the position he was, he was able to make top six/top five because the bike was working pretty good. But anyway, you know, every race is different. Everybody’s different. We are building up a lot of confidence. “Just to see myself doing pretty much the fastest lap of the race. When I was alone, I could make two or three on the rhythm. This motivates me a lot, because I know I can be in the front. “The problem was if I was not fast, but I know. I know, I’m fast. I know I can be in the front. Just we need to try to improve the qualifying.” With four flyaway races in the bag, the MotoGP paddock packs up in preparation for the start of the European season. Portimao and Jerez await, with both tracks filling the Spaniard with confidence due to his prior knowledge with the Aprilia machine. “For sure I arrive on a very different moment,” he said comparing this season’s Portuguese GP to 2021’s November visit to the Algarve. “I arrive with a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of motivation, different feelings. I think Portimao can be a very good weekend, but I don’t have any expectation more than learn. Learn the bike, learn a little bit more the team, still I need to improve ergonomics a little bit, because I’m not that tall. So I need to work a little bit more on the ergonomics to feel more comfortable, to keep pushing more on my riding style. And then… Today the bike was very good, I will not ask for nothing more than to start in the front.”

‘I was destroyed, I push everything’ - Marquez Marc Marquez was the comeback kid once again at COTA after the Repsol Honda rider salvaged sixth place from the back of the grid. Having already overcome the odds to even line up in Texas after his Indonesia injury and returning diplopia condition, Marquez didn’t get the best of starts in the AmericasGP after a technical issue on the grid saw his RC213V seemingly at a standstill as the pack swept by. The dramatic start made for an even more dramatic race as the eight-time champion began to work his way back up the standings at an impressive rate before determined late-race tussles with Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo saw his progress stall just shy of the top five. “Disappointed of course, because the speed was there,” Marquez said of his Sunday showing stateside. We had a technical problem on the start.,” he continued. “Already some message on the screen before and then I start and since first corner was like, was not the pit-limiter in, but was like something happened on the bike. But then when disengage everything, the holeshot device and everything, the bike start to work in a good way. So from that point I was last, even far from the last guy and I started to recover many positions. I did a few mistakes but is normal overtaking many riders, and we finish sixth. So yeah, the speed was there. Confidence. I go out from here with a higher confidence so this is the most important.” While the progress was impressive, the saves were likewise. “The thing is that when you overtake riders here is very difficult,” Marquez explained. “Especially in the first laps because with the slipstream is so difficult stop the bike and in turn one I was very lucky. “I tried to stop but then when I saw that it was not possible to stop, I find a small gap between Nakagami and Binder and I released the brakes to don’t hit anybody. This was the most scary moment. “Then I had the moment in turn ten also and also then a nice battle with Fabio. I was destroyed in the end because I push, from the first lap I push everything. When you start in front then you can manage your physical condition, you can manage the tyres but when you start on last position, I just give everything. Last five laps I was destroyed. “In T1 and T2 I was losing a lot because in the change direction I was very slow. But anyway I keep Fabio behind. Just one point more but okay, the most important is that our confidence are higher. “Now it’s time to come back home, relax. Breathe, because it was so stressful these last weeks and also this GP. Try to prepare Portimao. “We know that in Portimao, top five position maybe can be a nice position, but just I don’t fix any targets. We need to continue in that way. Just try to understand what is our level now, right now. And then still keep going.”

Mid-race changes grant Bastianini the win Picture: GeeBee Images Gresini’s Enea Bastianini was back in charge of the MotoGP standings on Sunday night after claiming his second victory of 2022 at COTA. Lining up fifth on the grid and at the back of a Ducati train, Bastianini showcased his impressive late-race pace as he blitzed his way past race-long leader Jack Miller on the factory Desmosedici in the closing stages. Having run third for the first half of the 20-lap race, the Italian bettered Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin on lap 12 and immediately began to hunt down his Lenovo sponsored cohort out front. The move on the Australian came just four laps later and with clear air ahead he didn’t look back. Bastianini met the flag with two seconds in hand for his second victory in the premier class, on just round four of his sophomore season. In doing so, the 24-year-old was back in command of the championship standings, five points ahead of Suzuki’s Alex Rins in second place. “The feeling is amazing because it’s a really hard race,” Bastianini explained from Parc Fermé on Sunday night. “Yesterday my qualifying has been not really nice. I crash and after I bring the bikes and I try to make good lap but second row, it stay possible for me today the opportunity to go on the podium. “Was important to stay soft and riding relaxed at the first part of the race because I have to save a little bit the body and also the tyre,” he continued. “When I see Rins very close to me, I understand now it’s time to push to go on the front. I overtake Jack and also Jorge Martin. I make a gap and I win this race in Texas. It’s pretty nice for me. “Really, in the middle part of the race, I think I could only go on the podium because Jack was too fast,” he admitted “It’s fantastic! For me, for the guys of the team, for my friends, for everybody. Now there is a lot of European races. I think is more difficult because many, many riders are too close. Especially I think, will be more difficult the qualifying but we are competitive, and we have to stay only concentrated and to have fun.” With his name returned to the top of the standings for the second time so far this season, does he feel the title is a realistic goal? “Can be possible, but for the moment I’m happy without pressure,” he admitted with a smile.
