And as much the US F1 fans are dying for a US driver to be competitive while Haas F1 continues to scorn Indy car drivers, Congress (AND YES!!!): They do mean Congress are asking for an explanation from Liberty Media and FOM after 1978 Formula 1 Champion Mario Andretti visited the Capitol having talks with Republican John James – who is one of the 12 bi-partisan signatories to the letter – to discuss the potential for anti-competition potential of FOM’s decision. racer.com/2024/05/01/u-s-congress-weighs-in-on-andretti-f1-situation/(Strowman = Congress, Andretti Global. Zayn = Liberty, FOM, F1 Teams)

Lets keep politics out of racing, this is enough of a clown show already the last thing we need are the clowns in DC getting involved.... Like they really care anyway they just want their name in the press and nothing will come of this what are they going to do block F1 from coming into the US until Andretti gets in?

It's all becoming very political, one of the presidential candidate's (I won't say which one) buddy's decided to use his paddock club suite at the Miami GP as a base for a fundraiser. The federal election committee warned him it was a violation and reported it to the races organizers. They promptly told the guy doing so was a violation of his lease and he would lose the suite with a refund if he continued with his plan. Or be shut down and escorted from the premises with no refund plus penalties is he did so behind their backs.

Yeah and it's been political for a long time anyway, with all the government money propping up so many GPs. The taxpayers of the State of Texas have pumped more than $400M into COTA so far. At that amount, we've basically paid for COTA but have zero ownership stake in the facility or the races.

well, we're up to 3 races. if the feds file a anti trust case it would take s few years. but the case would prolly go against liberty. they would have allow Andretti or exit the states. the brits would prolly be happy if the u.s. races were gone. but there teams wouldn't be worth billions anymore. is john malone still alive? he founded what is not liberty in the 90ies. i wounder what he thinks?

Yes the could very well do that. You want to do trade with the US you have to do it fairly. That's potentially 3 races off the calendar, even if it only a threat, F1 is going to have to take it seriously.

Going to Congress sounds like they've lost all hope.

Going to Congress sounds like they've lost all hope. When you want attention you have to crack some balls.

When you want attention you have to crack some balls. Wanting attention and getting quick results are 2 separate expectations. It's all about pressure being applied. Liberty are already in hot water over anti-trust practices at Live Nation, which they own. There have already been Congressional Committee inquiries over that. In light of that, they really do not need more anti-trust allegations and more scrutiny from those Committees into what might seem to be an emerging pattern of behavior among Liberty owned companies. That kind of pressure can work wonders. Did anyone really think GM, with their considerable resources, were going to take this sitting down? I didn't. Liberty might have pissed off the wrong folks.

Congress is one thing. Any legal action needs to come from the DOJ or the FTC. Inquiries are just that. At any rate I'm waiting on Liberty to respond by Fridays deadline.

The Andretti's aren't just relying on Congress, they're using them as leverage to get the ball rolling faster. The Sherman Antitrust Act isn';t something Stefano and the boys want to be on the wrong side of, it could shut down every event they hope to run in the US.

I see all that I just don't believe that getting Congress involved makes friends and solves Andretti's problems. Not for 2025, '26 or '28. If you look at the record of fines not a 1 in the last 20+ years is even remotely related to sports or entertainment. Live Nation has suffered so much by Congress and the DOJ investigations with a rumored anti trust inditement coming up that it had a record 1st quarter of 2024 and expects a record year. If Liberty were forced to stop doing F1 business in the US they wouldn't suffer, the fans would.

If Liberty were forced to stop doing F1 business in the US they wouldn't suffer, the fans would. They're not going to make friends in F1, at least not in the short or medium term. Most of the teams don't like Andretti, don't want to go up against them and GM, and have already said no, fabricating utterly nonsensical, childlike excuses for denying their admission into the commercial agreement (when everyone knows it's all about money). The 'making friends' ship sailed long ago. Andretti and Cadillac are not going to make anything worse by bringing pressure to bear. The teams and FOM have made it painfully obvious that there will be no making friends with Andretti. They couldn't even show basic respect to Andretti and either tell the truth about why they were rejected or come up with better bs excuses than the lame shit they rolled out there. It didn't have to be this way, but this is the way FOM and the teams wanted it, so this is the what they'll get. Like Mario said. "If they want blood, well, I'm ready". F*** FOM and the teams that are trying so hard to lock F1 into the same 10 teams into eternity. That hurts the fans far more than losing some US races.
