Aussie MotoGP star slaps Jack Miller rivals over near-deadly ‘plane crash’ carnage August 21, 2020 CHRIS STUBBS FOX SPORTS Jack Miller has called for calm. Jack Miller has called for calm.Source: Getty Images Jack Miller has called for calm in the MotoGP paddock after the horror crash in last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. The Australian was unaware of the mayhem that had occurred behind him until he returned to the pits after the race had been red-flagged. “I could just see bits of bike everywhere, it was like an aeroplane crash, just bits of bikes scattered over hundreds of metres, fortunately enough all the boys walked away from it relatively unscathed,” Miller told Fox Sports. Miller says Italian Franco Morbidelli and Frenchman Johann Zarco were equally to blame for the crash that occurred at more than 300kph and sent both riders’ bikes hurtling through the slow-turning pack ahead, narrowly missing Yamaha riders Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi. “That just puts it all back into perspective,” Miller said. “I think a couple of the boys might need to have a look at themselves and say, ‘hey we might need to calm it down just a little bit’.” Morbidelli accused Zarco of being a ‘half-assassin’ while Rossi said Morbidelli’s bike ‘almost killed him’. Miller says a sense of respect has been lost by some in the paddock. “I remember when I came in to MotoGP from Moto3 getting sat down after the first couple of races because I’d had contact,” Miller said. “They basically said to me ‘you’ve got to have this respect of your fellow competitors because we’re all out there trying to do our best but these machines are dangerous so you’ve got to respect them a little bit.’ “Especially when you’re young it’s kind of strange to hear that but the older I get the more you understand it. “Zarco and Morbidelli both have been in the championship quite some time now and they should probably understand that a little bit more so I don’t think either rider’s 100 per cent at fault themselves, I think it’s a mutual sort of thing.” The Queenslander believes the absence of four-time defending World Champion Marc Marquez through injury is also having an impact on the aggressive nature of this year’s racing. “It’s the first time any of us have had a chance,” Miller said.
ha ha ha “I know it sounds bad to say it like that but we’ve finally found a chink in Marc’s armour and I think everyone’s just going hell for leather trying to make up the points. “The racing is unreal at the moment but some of the boys especially just have to tone it down just a little bit when it comes to the fights.” Race organisers have extended the catch fence and air fence on the inside of turn three for this weekend’s Styrian Grand Prix but Miller says the controversial section of the track still won’t be safe enough. “Not unless they put a chicane half-way down it, that’s it,” Miller said. The 24-year-old was bemused the crash has generated such widespread coverage for the sport. “You can have absolutely amazing races and can’t get a look in on national TV but when people nearly kill each other it’s straight to the headlines.” Frenchman Fabio Quatararo leads the championship by 11 points after the first four races of the season.

Yamaha withdraws request to unseal MotoGP engines Motorsport.com Oriol Puigdemont Aug 21, 2020 Yamaha has withdrawn its request to unseal its 2020 MotoGP engines to fix a mechanical issue on safety grounds, Motorsport.com has learned. Last week, Motorsport.com revealed that Yamaha had lodged a request to the Manufacturers’ Association (MSMA) to be able to unfreeze its engines to fix an issue with the M1’s valve system. Both Valentino Rossi and Franco Morbidelli suffered engine-related retirements in the two races at Jerez, leading Yamaha to withdraw the unit from their allocations – as well as one from Maverick Vinales – for examination back in Japan. MotoGP’s official engine usage document published ahead of each grand prix revealed Vinales has already used all five of his allocation for the 2020 season, while Rossi, Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo have used four after just four rounds. Motorsport.com revealed last week that all Yamaha riders have been running with slightly reduced revs to preserve engine life. This was something both Vinales and Quartararo denied when asked about, though Rossi confirmed it when he said the engines had been turned down “a little bit”. Due to the coronavirus crisis, all manufacturers have had their engines frozen for 2020, with the non-concession manufacturers having to run the same spec of motor in 2021. Yamaha’s request to unseal its engines to the MSMA ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix was yet to have been decided upon, though the other manufacturers were not convinced by its argument that it needed to make a change on safety grounds. Motorsport.com understands the issue is a result of faulty valves from one of the two suppliers Yamaha has used for its 2020 engines. The MSMA asked for a document confirming the defective parts, though Yamaha never delivered this. Since Jerez, Yamaha hasn’t reported any more engine issues. The Japanese marque still leads the constrictors’ championship courtesy of Fabio Quartararo, with the Petronas rider heading Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso in the standings by 11 points ahead of the Styrian GP. Earlier this week, Motorsport.com reported that the MSMA had allowed KTM permission to unseal its engines to develop them for 2021 should it lose its results-based concessions this year. Having amassed four for Brad Binder’s win at Brno and Pol Espargaro’s 2018 Valencia podium, a KTM rider just needs a second place for the Austrian marque to lose concessions for next season.

RIDERS ‘UNANIMOUS’ IN CRITICISM OF MOTOGP STEWARDING Simon Patterson Aug 21 2020
A whole host of top names from the MotoGP world championship have spoken out about their disappointment at the way the FIM Stewards Panel hands out penalties and called for consistency.
MotoGP stewarding was on the agenda following the Austrian Grand Prix collision between Franco Morbidelli and Johann Zarco, which was the subject of a stewards’ hearing on Thursday, four days after the race.
A pitlane start penalty for Zarco was announced the day after.
The FIM Stewards Panel was created at the start of 2019 and includes former 500 and 250 world champion Freddie Spencer and American Motorcycling Association Director of Racing Bill Cumbow, with a third steward joining them on a rotating basis.
The new structure removed MotoGP race control from having any influence in the process of penalising riders. Race director Mike Webb was formerly a part of the panel but was removed when Spencer joined.
There has been a perceived lack of consistency since the changes were implemented, with sanctions seemingly handed out based more on the degree of attention an incident gets rather than the actual severity of it or previous precedent.
Before Zarco’s sanction was announced, Aleix Espargaro was one of the first to speak up ahead of this weekend’s Styrian Grand Prix, describing what many see as the problem with the current panel’s decisions.
“It’s unanimous – every rider in the safety commission isn’t happy,” Espargaro said. “I know it’s not easy, but what we don’t feel comfortable with is that it’s always different. They aren’t always equal with the same actions.
“It depends if the rider crashes or not. It depends if they’re leading the race or not. It depends if they’re MotoGP or Moto3. The rules are the rules, and it doesn’t matter if it’s two guys fighting for 20th in Moto2 or if it’s Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez.
“They have to try to be more equal, and we can improve on this. In some actions I don’t agree with them at all, but the most room to improve is on equality.”
In fact, so strong is the current mood among the riders that Espargaro was in almost complete agreement with Danilo Petrucci only five days after the two had a public falling out on social media and were summoned to the stewards after clashing during qualifying.
“Most MotoGP riders are not happy about what they [the stewards] do,” Petrucci said, “because there are many accidents like ones that happen at the front that aren’t judged the same and there are things that happen in MotoGP that aren’t judged the same as Moto3. There are many things to fix.”
Acknowledging that it’s not an easy job to police the grid, seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi is adamant that more needs to be done to protect the safety of other riders, especially in the smaller classes.
“It is a very difficult job to be a steward because it is always delicate but I think they need to speak with riders directly after the race, it is difficult to understand why they waited a week,” Rossi said.
“They have a lot of work because in Moto3 the situation is already dangerous, a little bit out of control. Also, in Moto2 and Moto3 we see a lot of contact in the straights, we see riders go straight into the other riders. This is very dangerous.
“At the end, they need to take the decision without pressure from the outside or from other teams and they have to speak mainly about the safety of the riders.”
The issues of inconsistency in penalties is even more pronounced in the smaller classes, with a number of Moto3 riders contacting The Race in recent races to express their lack of understanding in the penalties handed out to both them and their rivals.
The inconsistency was again highlighted when Petrucci was handed a warning for making rude gestures towards Espargaro after their clash. It’s something that riders were specifically warned about in 2016, and Moto3 rider Niccolo Bulega was fined €300 only a matter of days later, while a number of other riders have since been penalised financially.
Spencer’s appointment to the panel was originally applauded by riders, with all of them insisting that it is necessary to have an ex-racer on the panel.
However, with the three-time world champion retired from Grand Prix racing since the mid-eighties, in recent months many have now suggested that it needs to be someone with more modern experience.
“I have full respect for Freddie Spencer, but when was the last time he rode a MotoGP bike?” asked Espargaro. “We need someone in that position who has rode a MotoGP bike five or six years ago, who has been a rider in the premier class but who understands the paddock a little more.”
MotoGP also works in stark contrast to other series like F1 when it comes to media communication regarding stewards’ verdicts.
As a general rule, the series is unwilling to comment on most decisions and releases only the news of penalties, issued with no detail of their decision-making process, leaving many in the paddock in the dark about how the stewards reach their conclusions.

Valentin Khorounzhiy: After MotoGP leaves the Red Bull Ring this weekend (and before it comes to Portimao for the finale), it will hold eight races across Misano, Barcelona, Le Mans, Aragon and Valencia.
2019's winners at those five tracks: M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez.
Rossi after FP1: "17th time? I worked on used tires": "My pace is not bad, I'm quite happy".
Vinales: "positive feelings and I think I can be even faster"
David Emmett: Note: the punishment is for *Zarco's* next race, not the next MotoGP race. So if he isn't fit for the race on Sunday, he will start the first Misano race from pit lane
Dovizioso: "More severe penalties for those who leave the track": "The asphalt is a question of safety, it’s not necessary to go faster. This Sunday my rivals will be stronger and angrier."
Thomas Baujard: Personally, I have great esteem for Freddie Spencer. But several decisions raise questions. Why is Johann penalized when he is hit and injured in addition? Why aren't the Espargaro brothers punished for their unsportsmanlike conduct?

Jeremy McWilliams: It’s just pressure from Yamaha to act. Regardless of how each rider see it you have to make decisions based on fact. Fact is that Zarco didn’t intentionally move past Morbidelli and brake check him at 200mph, he made a pass then they touched. A couple of places penalty at most.
Mat Oxley: Quartararo: "I'm feeling really bad on the bike." His big problem is... overheating the rear tyre
Simon Crafar: If I turned up here with a freshly operated wrist, fired up to race, then to be told I had to start from pitlane... I'd be like why risk my wrist for so few points? I'd go home and see my girl, dogs and get strong for Misano.
Dovizioso pleased and relaxed about Day 1 form at Red Bull Ring: "Vinales and Quartararo did not consider me for the championship and conditioning them now definitely makes me happy”
Petrucci: "Pleased to see KTM improvements but I’m only thinking about this season
Rossi: "To stop the escalation of aggression we need more severity": "We should do as in F1. The future of Bagnaia? I hope to see him in the factory Ducati team. Today I made a mistake fitting the soft tire in the afternoon"
Steve Day: Zarco just said that tomorrow will be the first time he’s ever ridden with an injury, I said “that’s impressive!” His reply “Yeah apparently I’m a dangerous rider, and yet I’ve never been injured”.
Mir, about Zarco: "If Race Direction decides such a sanction, he deserves it"
Neil Morrison: Fabio looking perplexed. "Really bad feeling with tyres today and I don’t know why." Dismayed to see Dovizioso post a 1m 24.1s in FP1 with 15 laps on tyre. "We were struggling to be in the 1m 24s." Lots of work to do.
Morbidelli hopes to tone down the controversy and focus on the GP: "I didn't want revenge on Zarco, I consider him a friend. I respect the decision of the Stewards; the chapter is closed”
Mir: "Pol Espargaró is not the only favorite, Dovizioso wears a Ducati" The Spaniard was one of the fastest this Friday and aims to be back in the fight for victory.
A. Espargarò: "Aprilia the only chance for Dovizioso would be welcome": "I've always said he's my favorite rider on the grid. He would bring a lot of useful information for the Aprilia engineers and I could learn from him too. Zarco penalty? Too slight
Dovizioso: "I like to hear that Aleix Espargaró wants me to be part of Aprilia"
Quartararo: "Today everything went badly, Dovizioso is in better shape than me": "I can't understand why my tires degrade so quickly. The engine issue? Yamaha thinks it can finish the season like this, we'll see"
Zarco critical of FIM Stewards Panel: "Not the right people in the right place. We need real men to decide, but they are afraid to make decisions and don't know what to do”
The Zarco case and the third power: but does the FIM instruct the judges?: The decision on the Zarco-Morbidelli contact is debatable, but irrespective of who is to blame, it is evident that currently the judges decide without any uniformity of judgment…
Rins: "If it rains a lot, we will propose the possibility of running on Monday"
Jack Miller: “KTM winning? The race does not last 8 laps ":" I hear some of their riders talking about victory, but here you have to manage the tires. Marini or Bastianini in Pramac? They were talking about Martin, but you miss a GP and you are forgotten "

Rossi: "Morbidelli's bike finished at the end of the track, a wall is not enough" Motosan Raquel Jiménez Rodríguez 21 Aug. 20 Valentino Rossi finished the first day in Styria in ninth position. After a busy Thursday with race management, the Italian believes that if the race were in the wet it would be " very, very, very dangerous ". After the fifth place he was able to sign in the last race in Austria, Valentino Rossi arrives at the fifth round of the season with extra motivation. In the Italian box they seem to have found a positive point despite the bad feelings of his teammate. However, the incident in which he was indirectly involved seems to have penetrated the '46' who thinks that a race in the rain at the Red Bull Ring can be " very, very dangerous ". A weird day Focusing on the truly sporty, the Tavullia man spoke about his feelings on the first day of free practice in Austria. “ In the morning we couldn't get into the top10 because we tested new tires. In the afternoon it was very hot and on the asphalt where it was over 50 degrees for us it was very difficult to improve . But I think that tomorrow with less temperature we can improve ". “ My pace is not bad, but four or five drivers are faster than us and we are all very close. We decided to save a tire for tomorrow, but we made the wrong training session. The strategy of doing only one time attack was good, but it had to be done in the morning session , which was faster, and not in the afternoon, when we did it ”. Insufficient measures This Thursday, the pilots met, among other things, to prevent incidents like the other day of Zarco and Morbidelli from happening again. One of the measures that were taken was with respect to turn 3 where the incident occurred and in the place where a new wall has been installed that cuts the trajectory of the motorcycle in the event of an action like the one last Sunday. The truth is that, for the MotoGP veteran, this measure may be insufficient. “ I think the safety has improved at Turn 3 at the point where the crash occurred on Sunday. Luckily, Zarco's bike did not cross the track but Morbidelli's did . In fact, Morbidelli's bike finished at the end of the track so I think a wall is not enough. If the race were in the rain on Sunday it would be a very, very dangerous place ”. Another point that was discussed at that meeting was regarding sanctions. Most of the pilots agreed that these should be hardened and today the news was known that Zarco was sanctioned with leaving this Sunday from Pit Lane for irresponsible driving. “ The panel of commissioners is the one that decides the sanction. But, anyway, starting from the Pit Lane makes you lose a lot in a race so they have already done something ", answered 'Il Dottore'. Aggression from lower categories For Rossi, the aggressiveness that the drivers currently show does not only come from higher categories. “ The level of competition and aggressiveness is much higher already from the lower categories , from Moto3 the best riders are very very aggressive. And this is a scale, then they continue to Moto2 and when they get to MotoGP everyone is very aggressive. It's normal because, in the end, everyone gives their best to stay ahead but for me, sometimes, we would have to have clear rules ” . One of the riders who has always been very strong since Moto3 has been Pecco Bagnaia. One of Rossi's disciples who is now playing his promotion to the official team Ducati. " I hope to see Pecco dressed in red next season because of course it will be a good opportunity for him ." In the absence of official confirmation, the Italian will continue with Ducati next season, but it is not yet known whether as an official pilot or as a satellite.

Masia floods the track with oil, disqualified from Q2: VIDEO - The Leopard team driver crashes in turn 6 and starts again without a fairing, dirtying the track and causing Migno and Pizzoli to crash
Tammy Gorali: On a live interview just now on sport5il, Ciabatti just said that he hears in the paddock voices that world champion Marc Marquez might not be back at Misano
Rossi: "I made a mistake and the result is that we are in Q1" The Italian will have to go through Q1 after making a mistake at Turn 9 of the Red Bull Ring.
Q2: For all of the criticism, Dorna have done an amazing job with this series. A 4 year old team and design, and two 2019 satellite bikes on the front row. 5 manufacturers in the top 5
Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati team director: "We have signed a 2 year agreement with Pecco Bagnaia, but we do not yet know if it will be at Pramac or in the factory team. We are also continuing with Johann Zarco, and we will announce in which team before Misano. "
Martin Raines: Last MotoGP pole for a machine not manufactured in either Japan or Italy was @mcwill99 riding a ProtonKR at Phillip Island in 2002.
Thomas Baujard: 1st pole position for Pol Espargaro in MotoGP, and 1st pole for KTM. It is also a 1st front row for Nakagami. Well done.
KTM had not won a Dakar until 2001; then he won 18 in a row. In MX he had 6 world titles until 1999, then he won 29 of 54 at stake (125 / MX2, MXGP and 500 / MX3). In AMA SX he didn't win anything until 2015, now they have 5 out of 6. Hello MotoGP! The Austrian giant arrives ...
Mat Oxley: Miller is on his way to hospital to have an MRI on his right shoulder, injured in his T6 crash today
Simon Patterson: We knew this would be a season of attrition, but man. I make Jack the seventh rider out of 22 to have needed hospital treatment in four and a half races.

Doctor Costa: "Marquez's trauma had to be treated with a nail": "Plaque is not the best way to fix a fracture of that type. It damages the periosteum which increases the time it takes to form callus" Periostitis is inflammatory change of the periosteum and in the context of trauma, is an early change of stress response. There is no periosteal new bone formation as yet but cortical margin becomes ill defined and oedema is present in the soft tissues adjacent to the periosteum. Neoangiogenesis provides the newly formed callus with blood vessels. In 4-5 weeks, osteoblasts from the periosteum increase their own osteogenetic activity, secreting bone matrix which is gradually mineralized, leading to substitution of soft callus with hard callus.
Rossi: "Marquez out for another 2 months? We are all human, too": "After the injury in 2010 I only thought about getting better. Today I made two mistakes, the most serious in FP3. Everyone improved, but we didn't."
Quartararo: "I don't feel the pressure as Dovizioso said": "Tomorrow I'll start in front of him and I'll have to attack because I want to be able to be close to him". Morbidelli: "I don't know if Marquez will not return for physical reasons or because he can no longer win the world championship"
P. Espargarò: "Regret going to Honda? Nakagami is in the front row": "The first year we took 3 seconds per lap, now the KTM is a fantastic bike. Marquez? If a doctor tells you that you can go to the track, you you have to trust. It's the same with mechanics. "Life is decisions and he made one that did not go well"
Dovizioso: "To win again in Austria you will need a masterpiece": "I worked a lot on the pace, so I didn't have the right confidence in qualifying. KTM? The" lots of money "they talk about are subjective. The prolongation of Marc's absence does not change my situation
Fabio Quartararo: Good improvements on the pace but struggling a lot in QP. Ready to give everything P9
Neil Morrison : Dovizioso is tipping both Suzukis, Pol, Oliveira, Miller (depending on shoulder) and Nakagami to be running at the front tomorrow. As well as himself. 7 riders. "Can be a group for many laps and many things can happen."
Mat Oxley : Rossi says that when he got hurt in 2010 - like MM now - he at least had the World Cup to watch from his sofa
Thomas Baujard: Official announcer Steve Day explains: "Marc Marquez risks being absent for another two or three months due to complications." He therefore risks missing all of the GPs remaining in 2020. Courage Marc.
Pirro: “Zarco understood what the strengths of Ducati are”: “Ducati has shown itself to be a balanced bike. Dovizioso? He starts behind, but he knows how to behave in such situations, even if he will have to be careful "
Petrucci concerned about turn 1 chaos in tomorrow’s race: “This track is like Monza. If Masia had done what he did in MotoGP, they would have disqualified him for a race. Something like that hasn't been seen since the 1970s"
Jack Miller: “KTM a winner? The race doesn't last 8 laps.": “I hear some of their riders talking about a victory, but here we have to manage the tires. Marini or Bastianini in Pramac? They were talking about Martin, but you skip a GP and you're forgotten."
Oliveira: "Pol Espargarò was wrong, he should have looked out for me": The Steward Panel did not take measures regarding the contact between the two KTM riders during the race. Oliveira: "That was not his normal
First pole in category for Canet in Styria, 5th Bezzecchi: Great performance by the Spanish rookie, preceding Martin and Nagashima. 10th Bulega, 12th Marini, 15th Bastianini. Absent on the track Daniel: punished by the team for too many crashes
Alex Marquez: "The crash at high speed in the morning slowed me down": "The accident messed up our plans, I had to try another set-up, but I only had one bike left. I still have the Warm UP to recover something"
