My father worked at a Harley dealership when that bike came out. They could not give them away. In 1979 they still had 3 of the 1977 model year bikes that were sold at a huge loss. Now they are pretty coveted and demand a high price.

SPORTSTER BOBBER RSD by Lord Drake Kustoms PAR Posted on November 22, 2023November 22, 2023 This customized Harley known as “SPORTSTER BOBBER RSD” is a new work by Francisco Alí Manén, owner of the motorcycle customization company Lord Drake Kustoms in Vélez Málaga (Spain) and Miami (USA). At first glance it might seem like another bobber motorcycle built with a Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 base…but it is not. Several details make the difference in this spectacular work and one of them and perhaps the most important are the custom RSD wheels for Harley in black and aluminum that have been installed on this custom motorcycle. In addition, the rear is 200 wide and 18 inches in diameter, to give the rear a more brutal appearance. The LDK team has manufactured the license plate holder, the front fender, the single-seat rear fender for the Sportster and other details such as the bobber seat support and base. Semi-handlebars, a small fin, an LED headlight, turn signals or the Santee LAF exhausts are other details to highlight along with elements such as the Sportster bobber seat upholstered with a diamond design. The paint has been simple, a matte black color throughout the bike except for the graphics on the gas tank, which are white, and a small red detail that is the spark plug wires. Fran Manen tells us: “Sometimes a transformed motorcycle with a very visible and simple style can become a very spectacular customized motorcycle, simply with a few details that make the difference from the rest…. and this is one of those cases…and all this thanks to the wheels and the elegance when it comes to combining all the parts in this “SPORTSTER BOBBER RSD”

The Worst Motorcycles You’ve Owned - Reader’s Choice 1977–1979 Harley-Davidson XLCR Although coveted today, the 1977–79 Harley-Davidson XLCR suffered the same cursed birth as all AMF-era Harley-Davidson products in the ‘70s. The first bike penned by Willie G. Davidson, it was a striking, marked departure from period Motor Company design orthodoxy. But ultimately, it was a ‘70s era Harley in all the wrong ways. Labor disputes with new management meant unreliable motorcycles right out of the crate. Brakes were bad and its long wheelbase meant it was a pig in turns. The “Siamese” exhaust header supposedly added a few ponies, but the Ironhead mill was already maxed out on streetable power. Despite the “Siamese” exhaust headers and striking design, the Harley-Davidson XLCR only sold around 3,130 units in three years.Kevin Wing Worse, the styling was out of step with H-D consumers. Paltry sales numbers are a big reason they’re collectible today. Reader Bob H. experienced a particularly bad example: “I had a 1977 XLCR I bought new. Transmission failed twice, the fiberglass parts shook their metal anchor parts into pieces. Taillight snapped the plastic backing piece off, dragging itself on the rear tire.” Fellow reader Matt L. also chimed in: “I paid $2,999 out the door for mine. It had RUST under the paint on the tank that they refused to cover under warranty.”

FIT FOR A KING: SATOMARI’S 1981 HARLEY SHOVELHEAD For Yusaku Sato at Satomari Motorcycle in Hiroshima, Japan, good design is instinctual. The Harley choppers that roll out of his workshop just look ‘right,’ often with a simple elegance that belies the amount of engineering that goes into them.
