That's the point. THEY DON'T HAVE TO. All they have to do is not come back if they feel it's unsafe. This event did nothing to improve the odds of them returning. but they will come back if COTA puts on a race. even if someone gets injured or worse. case in point. look at indicar. those cars are not safe on the small ovals. but they put up a race on the small ovals, and the racers keep coming and racing. then something happens to someone like wickens. everybody pretty much says, oh bad luck for him. hope he gets better soon. and they continue to race where ever indicar puts on a race. Since when is Pocono a small oval?

"Safety" is a personal opinion that changes over time, experience, friends, alcohol, etc. There's also the thrill of risk taking, where a lower level of safety is more satisfying. Who's to say we should take that away? Where do we start? Motorcycles on the street? Sky diving? Flying? Rock climbing? Firefighters going into a burning building where nobody is inside, and it's a complete write-off? Not to mention without risk takers, YouTube would be boring. Are you safer in a race car at Pocono or in a 737 MAX? Or on a motorcycle on the street at beer thirty? Or with a married woman? I hung up the firefighter helmet last year, but wouldn't take anything from the guys still doing it.

We rarely do that, if ever. Risk a little to save a little. Risk a lot to save a lot (a life).

It's still a thing around here. The "Hittin' it hard from the yard" concept is making inroads, but in practice it depends on which generation is in the jumpseat. Part of the pushback is the idea of gaining real experience for when it does matter.

The "Hittin' it hard from the yard" concept is making inroads, but in practice it depends on which generation is in the jumpseat. Part of the pushback is the idea of gaining real experience for when it does matter. We used to do that when I started in the late 70's, but by the time I retired in 2001 we had wised up to the fact that getting someone hurt isn't worth any amount of training learned from it. Since commercial buildings on fire are rarely checked out before hand to know they won't come down around you, sure we did 'fire inspections' but they didn't involve structural things unless they were glaringly obvious, safety overruled going inside commercial buildings that had been abandoned, unless we thought there were people inside. Now homes we still went in unless they were coming down around us, then we backed out and protected the other homes around it. I worked in Alexandria, VA, a city of about 100k people of mostly homes but the commercial side is growing as the prices go up and up, for 24 years as a paid guy and only retired because they gave us the Pro-Boots which had zero arch support and caused bone spurs to come thru my achilles tendon on both feet, I have high arches so they put alot of strain on the feet. About 10 or 12 of us retired after they made the boots mandatory all from the same problem, they also refused to let us put arch supports in them which meant we all retired on 'non job connected' disability getting 50% of our base pay, tax free of course, until we reached age 60 at which point we went on regular retirement. I retired at age 49 ND THE others were around the same age,we told them when they got the boots about the no arch support problem but the new 'whiz bang Captain in charge' told us to sit down and shut up and the boots were ordered, Prior to that we had the rubber boots, either hip length or knee length after they provided bunker pants in the mid to late 80's. Stay safe out there and always keep your eyes moving!!

This bit about them denying exit to all those people is very interesting & strange. I wouldn't be surprised to see litigation as a result.
Then they cancelled the JMBLYA music festival that was scheduled the following day, citing "damaging 50+ mph" winds at COTA. Weird. No high winds at all at my house, & none at my buddy's across the road from COTA. Highest recorded winds for the day out there were 17 mph. COTA insurance claim inbound anyway, no doubt!
Judging from what I've heard from locals and from the videos & photos I've seen, the wind damage was minimal and was superficial/cosmetic. The real reason for this cancellation, imho, is that they knew there was no way in hell that Lot F was gonna handle parking those cars after all that rain. Remember after the 2015 USGP fiasco when they said they were gonna pave thousands of those spots? That never happened. Aside from 1 paved access road, Lot F is grass like it's always been, just like Lots, T, L, M, etc.

Is Epstein just trying to run COTA into the fuckin' ground? People already complain about the track resembling a parking lot because of the FIA Grade 1 insisted paved run off areas. Does he want the damn place to actually become one?

What a clusterhump! I guess they spent all their paving budget on run-off areas instead of parking. And then they won't let people leave?
They deserve to get sued back to the stone age.

Does he want the damn place to actually become one? Come on they are the best drivers/riders in the world all they have to do is change their driving/riding style.... If a pot hole the size of Alaska opens up on the apex of T12 they simply have to go AROUND it. You take what the track gives you not ask for basic improvements. If he pisses of the concert crowd he is done, dead do not pass go. They are a fickle bunch that have a lot of different venues to chose from in the immediate area unlike us dumb ass race fans that do not have a choice.

Wow. These guys...
COTA has pushed legislation that would retroactively allow them to collect the ~$25M they lost when they fucked up their 2018 F1 MERP application. HB 4008 would change the law, effective RETROACTIVELY, to cover COTA's ass on their own failure to obey the law.
Edited to show the version of the bill that includes the change (bold)...
